Chains

I go around the corner to get my bike. I don’t park in parking lots. Too often people see the end of the space open and swing in and tag your bike. I swing around the corner, hoping to catch one last impressive glimpse of Ms. Ada James, instead what I see makes my blood boil.

I see Ada all right. She is being hauled by some muscular guy in a ski mask into the back of an all-white van. No one else is around but the roar of the motorcycle engine gets her kidnapper’s attention and I quickly turn my head to make it look like I haven’t noticed them.

As they climb into the vehicle, I idle with the flow of traffic and turn to follow them. Sonsofbitches took the license plate off the van. Must have someplace safe set up nearby if they weren’t planning on getting pulled over. That means I have to get her out of that van as soon as possible.

With a stroke of luck, the van is stopped at a red light and I mosey up in the lane next to them. I hug the side of the van close to my bike. I slide a heavy link chain out of one of my saddlebags. Just as I see the driver go to glance up to his side mirror I bring the chain down on it, creating a shower of glass and plastic shards. Doesn’t matter if he has seen me at this point, he definitely knows that I am there. No, the point is that this catches him off guard, still gives me the element of surprise as I speed forward the short couple of feet between me and him.

I bring the chain through the window. I don’t know if the chain knocks him out or just stuns him. I do know it takes him out of commission long enough for me to get to the back of the van. As I yank the door open there is another man sitting between me and Ada. She has been gagged and, from the look of things, I interrupted him while he was binding her hands and feet. The guy, another fella wearing a ski mask says, “Who the fuck are you?!”

There is a light click as he flicks open a switchblade. I’m not sure what he is planning to do with it but I don’t feel keen on giving him any opportunities. I headbutt him, driving my forehead into his nose with a sickening crack, causing him to let out a shriek. While he is lying on the floor of the van, trying to see through the wall of pain and blood I left him with, I scoop up Ada.

I set her down on the back of my bike and help her get untangled from her bindings. “You’ve ridden a bike before, right? Know how to lean with me?” She nods and I climb in front of her and speed away from the van before either of those assholes have time enough to recover.
