Chapter Six
"I can't believe you used that spell on yourself." Lolita's voice was heavy with disapproval as she ran her thumbs down Ingrid's forearm.
The flesh was mottled blue and purple, and the slightest touch made her wince and gasp.
"I had to hide the venom somewhere."
"And you could have permanently damaged yourself." Small pulses of light penetrated into Ingrid's arm. The bruises cleared somewhat, but they weren't going to heal anytime soon. Lolita shook her head as she withdrew. "You bone seems to be in one piece, and there doesn't seem to be any damage to your tendons. You should consider yourself lucky. You could have killed your hand, pulling a stunt like that."
"Well, excuse me for trying to get us out alive."
Ingrid reached for the plaster bandages that were needed to wrap around her arm to keep her from bumping the tender flesh. Lolita grabbed them first and began to wrap Ingrid's arm. The brunette relaxed under her lover's gentle touch.
"I'm glad we're out," the blonde said quietly. "And I'm glad that we're both okay. It just worries me, you know? I don't like to see you in pain."
Ingrid relaxed slightly and nodded. "I know. I'm sorry I got us into that position in the first place."
Lolita nodded her acceptance. She finished wrapping Ingrid's arm, and activated the bandages, which instantly took on a cast-like quality. She smoothed her own shirt and then tucked Ingrid's hair behind her ear.
Moving slowly, as though she was uncertain how Ingrid would react, Lolita leaned forward and brushed her lips against Ingrid's. Ingrid closed the distance between them, wrapping her hands in Lolita's thick blonde locks. To her disappointment, Lolita pulled away before they could take the kiss further.
"Ginny, we have to talk."
Ingrid sighed, but she expected this. "I understand if you don't want to take another chance on me, after the way I treated you once we got home from Pluto."
"Not about that. Of course I want to take another the chance to be with you. I have wanted nothing more to be with you again." Lolita gave her a brief smile, but sobered quickly. "You killed today, Ginny."
Ingrid flinched.
"That leaves its own kind of scars."
"I'm fine."
"No, you're not. That sort of thing doesn't just leave you the same person you were before."
"He was going to kill us. It's not like I had a huge array of options." She thought about his gaping chest, the way his heart simply slipped out of his body and shivered again. "Maybe I'm not fine. Because I don't feel… I should be horrified. I should feel sick at what I did and how I did it. I can't hardly bring myself to swat flies because I feel bad for them. So why don't I feel anything about killing Jorgenson?"
Lolita wrapped her arms around her. Soft lips pressed to her cheek and Ingrid returned the embrace, wishing they could just stop talking and instead lose themselves in one another. But Lolita wasn't going to let it go that easily.
