CHAPTER SIX

Skye opened the shutters, rested her elbows on the window sill and gazed upon the Indian Ocean.

She was dazzled. And not just by the view, beautiful though it was. She was dazzled by everything that had happened in the last twenty-four hours.

In a series of distance-devouring legs, the jet had brought them to Mahé, the largest and busiest of the islands that made up the Seychelles. Then it was into an helicopter for the hop to La Digue – a ride that would be forever imprinted on her memory, over a sea of blue enamel scattered with coral islands that looked like emeralds en cabochon. Then her first glimpse of what would be her home for the duration of their stay, a six-bedroom colonial mansion perched on top of a secluded cove. The helicopter had set down upon a landing pad in a clearing among the papaya trees.

“Welcome to Anse Privée,” Simon had said. “Welcome to my home.”

Anse Privée … She stood there letting the place flood her senses but she still couldn't take it all in. All around her was the house itself, an elegant and fragile-looking structure made of local timbers and leaves. Below were gardens of breadfruit and mango trees. Then a flight of steps down a shelf of rock to the white sands of the beach, enclosed on either side by the arms of the bay. Extending from the beach itself a jetty where a catamaran was moored. The air, spiced with unfamiliar smells, was a balmy 92 degrees.

Almost purring with pleasure, Skye spun away from the view and inspected a sight nearly as beautiful: her own reflection in a full length mirror.

Each of the three girls had her own bedroom, and when they'd moved in they found surprises awaiting them – gift baskets laden with aromatic local toiletries and hand-printed beachware.

A lover of rare scents, Skye had just spent a happy half hour in the en suite, soaping herself into oblivion. Now she applied the final adjustments to a little white bikini printed with blue flowers, and toyed with the matching wrap, wondering whether to tie it around her waist or under her arms or leave it altogether. Starting from today, there was only one rule at Anse Privée, Simon had explained to the girls with the utmost solemnity last night at dinner: the men would always be nude, while the girls should wear at least a bikini.

In the end, Skye draped the wrap over her shoulder, slipped on a pair of flats and went padding off to explore. And, hopefully, find the master of the house. Although this was supposed to be a hedonistic hideaway, Simon seemed to have brought an ominous amount of work with him, and Skye had spent last night alone while he locked himself away making phonecalls and writing emails or whatever it was he did to keep the cogs of his business empire oiled. As she'd been bone-tired from the trip, she wouldn't have minded too much, except
