I found Javos in the kitchen of the warlocks’ headquarters, pulling the skin off a dead venos demon. I gagged on the smell. “What the hell are you doing?”

“It’s a shame to waste fresh meat.”

“You’re sick in the head.” I covered my mouth and nose and backed out into the corridor. “Please tell me the prisoner’s still alive.”

“For now.”

I gave him a stern look. “Watch it. She’s not the one who did it. Even if she’s still a celestial vamp, she doesn’t have the firepower.”

Javos tailed me to the prison room, like he expected me to sneak her out of there. Which I would have done if I was a hundred percent assured of her innocence, and I wasn’t. She had some serious explaining to do.

Lydia sat in the same position as before, and gave Javos a wary look. While he wasn’t doing anything explicitly intimidating, he looked terrifying without even trying, and I didn’t blame Lydia for sitting as far away as possible from his blaring aura and menacing stare.

“You’re scaring her,” I told Javos. “If you want her to tell you anything at all, let me speak to her alone.”

“If she’s a criminal, I intend to treat her as such. Participating in the murder of my fellow warlocks is not an act I will brush aside.”

“She didn’t do it,” I said firmly. “She’s not Grade Four and was infected with demon venom until recently.”

“She’s hiding something.”

No kidding. I was less than convinced the Grade Fours were a secret worth keeping, but if anyone needed to know and deal with them, the guild did. The inspector’s head would explode if he found out that a whole bunch of other Grade Fours had gone rogue. If I told Javos, someone else’s head would explode. Probably a lot of someones.

“Tone it down,” I told Javos. “If she has anything useful to say, I’ll tell you.”

He grunted and slipped out of the room, as lithely as it was possible for a gigantic warlock to move.

“You have got to be kidding me,” I said to Lydia, once I was sure we were alone. “Grade Four celestial vigilantes? Are you seriously working with them?”

“No, of course I’m not working with them. They’re terrifying fanatics.”

“I knew that charm was all an act,” I muttered. “They tried to recruit me. Know anything about that?”

“That’s why I sent you to them. I thought they’d tell you the truth.”

“How did you wind up tangled with them in the first place?”

She sat up straighter, running a hand through her matted hair. “They kidnapped me after the battle.”

“Seriously?”

She nodded. “Like I said, fanatics. They made these odd claims about you being their potential saviour… that you were a celestial demon with your own soul, owned by both heaven and hell at the same time. Because the angel who marked you fell from grace.”

A chill raced down my back. It wasn’t as though I’d spread the information wide before the battle had given me no choice. I was pretty sure none
