Chapter Six

Paxton

“What’s your father’s diagnosis?” I asked Maya, as I drove us back toward the city. She was quiet beside me. Nervous, conflicted, I had no idea, but I was enjoying the hell out of every moment of being around her. In a matter of days, the ennui I’d felt toward my life had been cast off, and I felt awake again, for the first time in years. The reason was sitting beside me. Maya was a shock of cold water over the head after being drowsy and bored for too long. Her file, the usual info required for working in my offices, had been illuminating. Her past, growing up alone with only her father, a man who had drunk himself into a care facility that his daughter was now responsible for, but she was dedicated to nonetheless. Her student loans, and high rent. I didn’t bother checking anything else. I didn’t care about anything else except that which would bring me closer to this woman who had captured me so completely.

“He has liver failure,” she said matter-of-factly.

“How long has he had it?”

“A decade or more,” she answered quietly. “There are a lot of complications.”

“Is he on a transplant list?” I wondered. She folded her arms over her chest and looked away out the side window.

“He is but he’s too old and too sick… there’s not much I can do for him now but make him comfortable,” she said. My heart constricted for Maya, and the burden and pain she carried, without showing it. That she could maintain her teasing and light-hearted personality when she had such weight to bear was admirable. I felt properly chastised for finding fault in my easy, privileged life. It also shone a light on why Maya might be working for me and spying, no less. She needed money for her father. I couldn’t be upset by that.

We entered the city, and I made my way to my townhouse, taking up almost a full block on the Upper East Side. The place usually felt like a mausoleum to grow old and die alone in, but today, I looked forward to showing it to Maya. Like a peacock hoping to impress its female with the life I could provide for her, should she choose me.

I’m not sure exactly when my thinking toward her had shifted from physical attraction to full-blown possession, but I couldn’t deny that I wanted Maya to be more than a notch on my much-neglected bedpost. I wanted her and her problems in my life. I wanted messy complications and every single thing that might come with such a woman. I wanted it all, and I wanted it with her. The thought should have been shocking, for a man like me. Married to his work, withdrawn from society, and yet, it wasn’t. As soon as I’d realized it, I felt a calm I’d never felt before. Of course, Maya was mine, as I was hers, and we were meant to meet. Of course, she was the one I’d been waiting for, without even realizing it.
