`So,' Gregory said, when he finally pulled up outside the house, `would you like to invite me in for a cup of tea?'

Sophie opened the car door and began to help Jade with her things, slinging her bag over one shoulder.

`That's right. It never ends.' She stepped out of the car and then half lifted Jade out from behind. `Thank you very much for putting me up, and for giving me a lift back. As soon as this weather clears I'll come and fetch my car.' She shut the car door and was on the verge of moving off when she saw the window roll down.

Ì'll be seeing you around,' he said, looking at her with one hand on the steering-wheel and the other on the gear lever.

`Possibly. It's a small place.'

Before he could embark on anything resembling a conversation she turned away, holding Jade's hand, and headed towards the front door. She could feel his eyes on her back as she fumbled in her bag for the key.

Maybe it was the bracing weather, or maybe just the heralding of a new year, but Sophie hadn't felt this alive in a long time.
