Tired but still buzzing with post-show energy, Shay paused outside the bus’s toilet and watched the night highway pass by outside. She shifted her gaze toward the front of the bus and noticed Addy sitting in the captain’s chair closest to the bus door. Toddling her way up the aisle of the moving bus, she flopped into the chair next to Addy and swiveled it to face her.
Addy took no visible notice and kept staring out toward the empty highway.
Shay pulled her knees up and settled her afghan tighter around her shoulders. She wiggled deeper into the seat and rested her arms on her knees and her chin on her arms.
Addy still stared absently out of the front window and Shay took the opportunity to study her profile in the dim light. A smooth wide forehead, high cheekbones, and sharp jaw did give her the angular good looks of a model. A paper-thin white scar underscored a quarter-inch on her fine left eyebrow giving her a look of calm cunning. Her perfectly proportioned nose was mostly model strait, but had a slight hitch near the bridge where a break had likely mended. It lent her a little mystery without marring her classic beauty any in Shay’s eyes. Shay sighed. Her security lead was undeniably attractive, but also annoyingly concrete and staid compared to the tall, dark, artsy, and effusive types that normally heated her libido. “So, Addy, what did you think of the show?”
“The crowd was very enthusiastic. I’d say your talents were very well received.”
The off-hand compliment hung in thinly heated bus air for several pregnant seconds before Shay realized why it stung. Addy hadn’t even glanced at her.
“I mean, what was your opinion of the music?” For some reason, Shay wanted an all-out endorsement from the woman. When their eyes had met on occasion during the show, she could have sworn that she, her music at least, was having some very visceral effect on Addy. She thought those glances had marked the threads of understanding and affection twining tighter between them.
“First of all, as a security expert, I’m not really qualified to have a meaningful opinion.”
“Sure, you are. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. It’s my job as an artist to find the useful kernel of intelligence within it.”
“Second, I would say I was too distracted with doing my job well to really give the music a fair assessment.” Addy’s face stayed bland, dull, and distant.
Shay heard herself ask in a small voice, “Are you disappointed in me?”
Addy looked at her then, brown eyes darker than Belgian chocolate in the dimness, and raised both eyebrows. “How so?”
“About Mitch, I mean. You think that I’m the cliché rocker who slept around and that I just ended up pregnant.”
“It’s not for me to say. Who am I to judge your life?” Weller’s voice was low and level.
“Don’t you like me enough to care?” Shay was hoping to spark more emotional light in Addy’s expression.
“No, the opposite. I like you too much to judge your personal choices.
