Catch of the Day closes at nine, and I’m waiting right outside the door in my pickup truck when Daya comes out. I’ve showered the sea off me, and I’m ready to spend the evening with my girl. I beep the horn at her and she waves and bounces towards me, which is utterly captivating to watch.

She’s carrying a brown paper bag which she sets on the seat between us.

“Lobster rolls, courtesy of Dennis,” she says. “Plus a beef shank for Gus.”

“That dog eats better than I do.”

“Do you want to trade?” she asks, her eyes sparkling. “I bet he’d eat a lobster roll. We don’t even have to tell him the shank’s not for you.”

I reach over and touch her cheek. It’s gentle and disproportionately intimate for a woman I’ve only known for a couple days, but it feels right. She sighs and leans into my hand. I reach across her and pull on her seatbelt. It’s my job to protect her, and I’m damn well going to.

My house is only a mile or so away; we could have walked, but I didn’t want to make Daya do that after a long shift on her feet. We pull into my driveway and we can hear Gus barking even before we open the doors of the truck.

“Someone missed you,” I tell her.

“I hope so,” she says, smiling at me.

It takes all my restraint not to pin her against the side of the truck and kiss her breathless. I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep my hands off her much longer. I grab her hand and pull her towards the door.

It’s a good thing she’s behind me when the door opens, because Gus barrels out. I’m used to the onslaught, so I can maintain my balance. He weaves around me, his big eyes focused on Daya.

“Hi, baby,” she says. He sniffs at the bag. “Zeke says you get your choice. Lobster roll or beef shank.”

He practically herds us inside, his tail whipping like mad.

“C’mon, you,” I say to Gus as I open the door to the backyard. He sits expectantly in the doorway as I fish out the beef shank. “This should keep you busy for a while, at least.”

I turn back to find Daya smoothing the thick wool blanket from the couch on the floor.

“What are you doing?” I ask her. My lips quirk into a grin that belies the sternness I’m aiming for.

“Picnic,” she says, smiling up at me.

And if she wants a picnic, we’ll have one.

I head to the fridge and grab a couple beers before returning to the blanket. I sit next to Daya and offer her a beer. She takes it and clinks her bottle against mine.

“So, why Merritt, Maine?” I ask her.

Her cheeks redden, and she traces the plaid pattern on the blanket. “You’ll laugh at me.”

I tip her chin up. “I might laugh with you, but I promise I’ll never laugh at you.”

She takes a breath. “I closed my eyes and pointed.”

Ok, this is testing what I just said.
