I’d wanted to go on this date with Daniel Fox for months, ever since I’d first heard the band perform and he’d caught my eye. But now, it felt a little hollow. I’d thought about Nate all weekend, pretty sure I was blushing to my roots the whole time too. And then, after class yesterday…My body practically hummed when he was near, like every part of me remembered the things he’d done, the way he’d made me feel, and like the idiot I was, I wanted all of those things again.

Thank God my head was on straight though or I’d be in all kinds of trouble. But I’d meant what I’d said. I wasn’t interested in some friends with benefits agreement with him, and that was that.

I wanted a real relationship with a guy who really was interested in me, a guy who’d care about me, a guy who would be able to love me. And that wasn’t Nate. Clearly. His life was falling apart and I couldn’t really blame him for needing to focus on school. And if I was nice, I would have agreed to help him study for history. But the idea of spending time with him was a really bad idea, at least as far as my heart was concerned. I wasn’t even sure how my heart had gotten involved, but it had.

So that meant I had to stop thinking about Nate and start thinking about Daniel, which was pretty ironic since I’d been thinking about Daniel for months until this last weekend. I parked in a spot at The Royal Grill, pulled my keys from the ignition, and adjusted my rearview mirror to check the makeup Molly had done one last time. I looked marginally like myself, I supposed. Still, lots more makeup than I usually wore.

Daniel was out front of the grill. I took a deep breath. He was nice guy. I’d liked him forever. And the date was going to be awesome. I wasn’t gonna think about Nate, not even once.

So I stepped out of my car and started for the entrance. Daniel smiled when he saw me, and I smiled back. He reached his hand out to me and I took it.

Daniel kissed my cheek and whispered, “You look great.”

“Thanks,” I said, as I stepped back from him.

He gestured to the entrance with a nod. “Should we go in?”

“Yeah.” I stepped around him and opened the door to the restaurant.

It was pretty dark inside. Lots of old wooden tables, with small votives to light the place in a soft, warm glow. And it was crowded. Really crowded for a Tuesday. I’d been here a couple times in the past and I couldn’t remember it being this crowded before. Something must be going on.

An overwhelmed waitress met us at the hostess stand and quickly showed us to a table near the front of the grill. She handed us menus as we took our seats and promised she’d be back soon to take our order.
