Chapter 11

Londyn hoped she’d dawdled long enough for Sheriff Hudson to leave for work. She didn’t want to see him for a very long time. The man was infuriating. Last night he’d almost kissed her. Kissed her for real this time! And she’d been willing and ready to kiss him right back.

Thank goodness his brother had saved her. Right now, Zack was her hero. He sort of looked like a superhero with his blue eyes, sun-streaked long hair, and muscled physique. He also looked a lot like his older brother, who happened to have an equally fit body.

Londyn squeezed her eyes shut, trying not to remember seeing Owen shirtless this morning after he’d finished his run. She’d spied him from the bedroom window while he talked on his phone. Londyn would like to say that she’d only looked at him briefly, but that wasn’t true. He was like a powerful magnet, pulling her to him no matter how hard she tried resisting. Now the image of his glistening bronzed torso was imprinted permanently in her brain.

Trying to forget the image, she grabbed her purse from the dresser and hurried outside to meet Zack. They were going shopping for a new wardrobe for him. Then they were going to the beach to soak up some much needed vitamin D from the sun.

“Nice wheels,” Zack said, leaning against her rental car. “I’ll bet it goes fast.”

“It does.” She almost told him about getting pulled over but didn’t want to think about Owen. Putting her sunglasses on, she crossed the yard. “Want to drive?”

“Heck yeah,” he said, opening the passenger door for her.

She buckled up and watched as he rounded the front of the vehicle, pausing to look at something on his phone. His lips quirked up into a smile, reminding her of his older brother. However, there was one glaring difference between the two Hudson men: only one of them stole Londyn’s breath, and it wasn’t the brother going shopping with her.

“Thanks for going with me,” Zack said as he climbed in behind the wheel. He placed his phone down on the center console and slipped on a pair of aviator sunglasses. “I haven’t purchased anything other than cargo shorts and tee’s over the past three years.”

“Sure, I love shopping,” Londyn said, catching a glimpse of Zack’s phone screen before it darkened. He had a friend location app opened that showed a dot not too far from here that belonged to Owen.

“So, Londyn Montgomery,” Zack said as he backed out the driveway and then headed toward a shopping mall, “what’s your story?”

“A very boring one,” Londyn answered with a small laugh.

“Your answer is what’s boring,” Zack said. “I Googled you this morning.” He let out a low whistle. “Promising acting career, hotel heiress, and your dating a Preston.” He flashed a white-toothed smile her way. “Not boring.”

The brief summary of her life didn’t sound flattering, but she supposed it was accurate. All except the dating a Preston part. She wasn’t dating a Preston anymore.
