Chapter 6

Sadie returned to the ballroom to find that many of the guests were taking their leave of the festivities and were heading back to their respective suites.

As she looked around at the remaining guests, she realized that Sylvia Rush, if indeed that was her, was gone.

“Do you think she has returned to her room?” Tiffany said.

“I don’t know,” Sadie said. “If she came here uninvited, she might not even have a room to go to.”

“I’ll go take a look out on the patio,” Tiffany offered.

“Good,” Sadie said. “Thanks. Meanwhile, I’ll go to the hotel bar to see if she might not be there.”

Sadie walked through the hotel’s main corridor and came to the intimate little lounge bar.

The darkened room had several patrons seated along the bar and a few others at the cozy little tables lit by small decorative candles. In the far corner, a lone woman with a cascade of auburn curls was quietly playing an acoustic guitar. It made for a very relaxing atmosphere.

Sadie was about to walk out when she noticed the striking blonde wig under the glow of a dim overhead light. Seated at the very end of the bar, Sylvia looked haggard and miserable.

Taking a deep breath, Sadie was cautious as she approached the seemingly drunken woman.

“Mind if I have a seat?” Sadie said as she pulled back the vacant wooden stool beside Sylvia.

“Go ahead,” Sylvia said with a dismissive wave of her hand. “It’s not as if tall, dark and handsome is going to come over and make my day better.”

Hunched over her drink, Sylvia looked a lot older than she actually was.

“I believe I saw you at the Luna/Spencer wedding,” Sadie said. “Quite a day, wasn’t it?”

Sylvia tilted her head to the side and looked up at Sadie. “You,” she said as she pointed at Sadie with a shaky finger. “You’re Luna’s cute little friend from some little town in upstate New York.”

Sadie nodded. “Fortune Falls, New York, to be exact.”

“Right.” Sylvia nodded. “You’re the chef. The pastry chef. The one with her own shop… her own dessert catering thing.”

“That’s right.”

“You certainly are a cutie pie, aren’t you?” Sylvia said as she pushed up from the bar and tried her best to sit up. “Yeah. The camera would just love that cute little face of yours. Cute in a way that the women will enjoy watching, but attractive enough to draw in a sizable male audience as well.”

“Thank you,” Sadie said, feeling the heat of blush rush to her cheeks.

“Tell me, kid,” Sylvia said, slurring slightly. “Do you have an agent?”

“Well… no,” Sadie said. “I’m not in show business. I mean, I often bake for celebrities, but I’m not a celebrity… at least not in that way.”

“You should be, kid. You’re too good looking to be locked up in some bakery out in Fallen Falls.”

“Fortune Falls,” Sadie corrected.

“Right.” Sylvia took a closer look at Sadie. “You know there’s an opening for a cute little chef on this cooking show. The part just recently opened up and would be perfect for you.
