Chapter Sixteen

Shay and Mel are already outside talking with Austin when I emerge onto the front porch. Austin is handing Shay a set of car keys and pointing to my right. Then I recall that’s where the garages are, around the side of the house.

Shay heads that way, and Mel turns to me as I walk up to them. She quietly informs me, “Austin gave us the keys to a spare car, since it looks like you two are going on a date at the cemetery.” She winks at me while her lips pucker up in a kiss, then turns with a mischievous grin and follows Shay.

When I look at Austin, his aura is saturated with brown defensive energy. He opens his mouth to speak and I step up to him, firmly shaking my head.

“Forget it. I’m riding with you. Don’t make this more than it has to be.”

He stares at me as light-violet surprise deflates his defenses. “How did you know what I…are you a mind reader as well?”

“No,” I laugh. “But I do read auras. And since emotions are energy, I read what you’re feeling. That’s how I knew, in that moment, that you wanted what happened in the elevator—every bit as much as I did. The same way I read, and respect, your boundaries right now. And if I ride with them, they’ll know something’s up, which like I said is making this more than it has to be. I’m cool…are you?”

Austin stands dumbfounded for a few moments, then speaks. “Reading my emotions—you do realize how creepy that sounds, don’t you?” Then he shrugs. “All right, it sounds like we’re both clear where we stand. They’re waiting for us, so we better get going.”

Shay and Mel wait in an older but clean looking sedan at the edge of the driveway as Austin and I get in his truck. Then they follow us out to the main road and into town.

An awkward silence settles between us as Austin drives. Now that he knows I can read his aura, his energy has a strong tinge of wheat-colored self-consciousness and discomfort. That’s exactly the reaction I got from the few guys I dated as a teenager, before I met Ray. I’m content to let Austin ponder my revelation for now, because we’ll likely have plenty of windshield time once we know where we’re going.

Instead, I stare out the window on my side as we drive into the small town, and pay attention to the various ramshackle shops, many of which are not dedicated to a single business. One combination that particularly fascinates me is a laundromat doubling as an independent cellular phone provider. Then again, it makes sense, because there’s no time when you’ll wish for a cellphone more than when you’re just sitting there watching your clothes tumble dry.

On the far end of the eight-block town, Austin makes a U-turn to park in front of the courthouse, which doubles as the seat for the county office, including records. As
