Cascading Cataclysm 13

“This is the commune?” Elenora asked, voice flat.

“It is.” Trace nodded in response.

The Cursed Witch raised her head as she stared at the half-constructed wall that barely rose up ten metres. She sighed and shook her head.

“This is pathetic.”

Trace frowned. “Oi— we put in a lot of effort into building it!”

“Not really,” a voice came in response. One of the Builders resting by the construction site shook his head. “We’re literally volunteers. I never even used a hammer in my life until a month ago.”

Elenora crossed her arms. “As I said: pathetic.”

“That’s…” The redhead just scratched the back of her head. “My section of the wall is better? …”

“Somehow, I highly doubt that,” Elenora said before striding into the bounds of the commune.

* * *

Certainly, Trace Taylor was no architect. Sure, she had been given the vocation of an Architect— an Augur Architect, to be specific— but she never got an architectural degree or anything of the like. In fact, she just had a diploma from highschool.

So expecting her to be a master at building literally anything was like expecting a child to suddenly be good at drawing. There were definitely child geniuses that existed who could paint the Mona Lisa in a day. But they were incredibly scarce.

While the redhead was pretty darn average, all things considered.

“Shut up, Ex,” Trace said mentally. “Stop invading my damn thoughts.”

[Fine,] he said. [You are no fun. But you know as well as me that that is true.]

Sighing, the redhead just walked ahead of Elenora. Trace glanced towards the section of the wall she had been working on. It was mostly complete. Even though she hadn’t spent that much time working on it, others have.

She spotted both Stanley and Meryl resting there with a dozen other volunteers. That surprised the redhead, considering that most of the Builders working on the other sections of the commune’s walls had taken the last week off due to the repeated monster attacks.

It was incredibly dangerous to be working on the walls right now, but some volunteers still persisted, like Stanley and Meryl. Trace pursed her lips. She hoped nothing happened to the middle-aged couple. They had been incredibly kind to her— almost like her parents… when they were kind to her.

Trace paused as the thought of her mother and father crossed her mind. She hadn’t really been thinking about them at all lately. With everything she had to do over the last few weeks, and with the scare she felt knowing that she might have triggered a war between worlds, she hadn’t even had time to wonder what was happening with them.

But now, she hoped her parents were alright. And the only reason she even remembered about them was because of the Cursed Witch. Glancing back, Trace looked at Elenora curiously.

“Where are we going now?” Elenora asked, sweeping her gaze gradually across the commune.

“We’re going to meet with Veronica Vargas first,” the redhead explained. “Just let her know that you’re all fine to stay here since… y’know…”

“I see.
