Chapter 19

Jerome Dirksen had been a decent student and a pretty good athlete in high school, but he also liked to have a little fun. Like many of the other kids in his school, he’d gone to a few keggers and smoked pot now and again. No big deal. Everyone did it.

But after he graduated, life started to take a turn. Several of his friends had gone off to college and a couple went into the military. He was a bit lost, and out of boredom and self pity, he started drinking more and playing around with other drugs. He excused his substance abuse, telling his buddies it helped him get over the fact he’d had “a shitty life.”

His parents had divorced when he was twelve. His dad had immediately remarried, and for whatever reason the new wife didn’t take a liking to Jerome. She started popping out kids, and from the arrival of the first half-brother, his father had very little time for Jerome or his sister. On top of that, his mom had mowed through a string of boyfriends. Each, in Dirksen’s opinion, was a bigger jerk than the last. So, as soon as he turned eighteen and could legally be on his own, he was out of there.

After high school, Dirksen went to work at one of the big box home stores that sold hardware and appliances. But after a while, making only minimum wage just wasn’t cutting it. He needed something else to help cover his monthly bills. So, after a friend had hooked him up with some cocaine one day, Dirksen inquired about becoming a seller too. One thing led to another, and pretty soon Dirksen had quit his job at the home store and was making some serious cash providing pot, cocaine, and a few other goodies to a robust list of clients.

He had just made a late-night delivery to a doctor’s wife in West Valley and was walking back to his car when a bullet hit him in the center of his chest. The residents in the affluent neighborhood had not heard the shot, so unfortunately for Dirksen, no help was coming. Not that it would have done any good. Within ninety seconds, he had lost a significant amount of blood, and in another thirty seconds his “shitty life” was over.
