Chapter 18

It was just starting to get dark when Luke pulled off onto a wide shoulder on Highway 25. He had looked at the map on his GPS and tried to figure out where Carter might hit the highway based on the direction he had been walking and the topography of the surrounding area. It was likely Carter would take the easiest path, and Luke thought he had found it.

As he was driving, Luke called his captain to give him a recap of the events of the day.

“Yeah, I heard from Jerry Hill, the Region One captain,” Bob Davis said. “I guess Cody Stephens was a lucky man.”

“Very lucky. We have everyone in custody, except the guy who shot Stephens. I’m trying to track him down now.”

“Sounds like there’s enough evidence to put the poachers away for a while,” Davis said.

“I think so. I’ll be glad to get back to Yakima,” Luke said. “Sara says she has been looking at singles dating sites.”

Davis laughed. “And that dog of yours might not even know you anymore.”

“Sara says he’s been moping around the place, so I think he misses me as much or more than she does.”

“Well, get this Carter guy and head home.”

“That’s the plan.”

After finishing his call with Captain Davis, Luke called Sara to update her on things.

“Are you coming home?” she asked.

“Probably not tonight, but tomorrow hopefully.”

He told her what had happened that morning, and Sara gasped when Luke told her about Stephens being shot. Luke left out the part about Hernandez trying to take him down. No need to worry her any more than she already was.

“Would you like to have Jack with you?” Sara asked.

“Yeah, I might have tried to track this guy down with Jack. But I think I have it figured out where he is headed.”

“I sure hope so. We really miss you.”

“I miss you too. I’ll let you know when I catch him.”

After they’d hung up, Luke started thinking about Sara. He really did miss her. They had been married for four years, and to Luke she was still the perfect match for him. Sara was smart, funny, and incredibly beautiful. Way out of his league. He still didn’t know how he had gotten so lucky.

Carter walked steadily around steep inclines, down through brushy ravines, over hundreds of downfalls, and through creeks. He had cut across several Forest Service roads and at one point saw a Stevens County Sheriff’s SUV parked on one of the roads by a big meadow. From what he could see through his rifle scope, the rig was empty. The deputy was most likely out looking for him.

Carter watched the sun and kept on a westerly course. He had never walked this way before, but he knew that sooner or later he would end up on the highway that would take him out of the forest. His legs were sore and felt like they were going to start cramping, so he slowed down but kept moving. Part of the issue was he hadn’t had anything to drink all day.
