Chapter 26

The truck crept into the forest and stopped after a hundred yards. Clay turned off the headlights and turned to Jason. “We’ll let our eyes adjust to the dark. Then, once we're ready, I’ll drive slow as possible and only use the parking brake so we don’t light up the forest."

Their eyes adjusted to the moonless night five minutes after they killed the headlights. Millions of stars, obscured only by a few lingering clouds, provided enough light to move through the forest.

Clay whispered to Jason. "What I wouldn't give to have our night vision goggles right now."

“That’d be ideal, but I doubt those cartel pricks have any light discipline. Let’s use that to our advantage.”

Clay took his foot off the brake and let the truck inch forward a couple of miles an hour at idle speed. Twenty minutes later, Jason slapped Clay on the shoulder and pointed at ten o'clock.

"I saw a flash of white light."

Clay switched to neutral, slowed to a crawl and then applied the parking brake to stop without creating a noticeable red glow in the dark forest. The truck windows were down, so they both listened and focused their gaze to the left of the hood. They didn't see or hear anything for another five or six minutes until a flame flickered for a few seconds. In the dark of night, it seemed to light up the entire forest. Jason chuckled at the thought that the cartel members couldn't resist smoking, even if it meant giving their position away.

Clay disabled the dome light before opening the door, and they slipped out undetected.

Standing behind the rear tailgate, Clay slid his Glock into his waistband. Jason started into the forest with Clay following silently ten feet behind him. Their footfalls were concealed under the cover of thousands of insects serenading their mates on the balmy summer night. They continued in the direction of the light until Jason put his fist in the air. They both dropped to a knee and observed the area. Jason heard voices and saw cell phones illuminate the faces of several men. He moved back to Clay and knelt beside him.

He leaned in within a few inches of Clay’s ear and whispered, "I count four or five of them.

Although they followed the cartel members from Show Low and saw them in the woods with his own eyes, Jason was surprised to find them so quickly. The armed Central Americans had been elusive up to this point, almost as if they had received advanced notice that somebody was coming. Now they were easy to find. A little too easy.

“I see weapons, but I don't see anybody on security,” Jason whispered.

Clay chambered a round. "So how do you want to do this?"

Jason watched the men huddled together around a phone laughing. They could be the same people that drove his mom and Josh off the road. A quick flash of revenge made Jason want to rush ahead shooting to make them pay for what they did to Josh, but the sensible side of Jason’s brain kicked in.
