Carmen, the literary and musical invention of Prosper Mérimée and Georges Bizet, was born in the port cities along the Islamic Mediterranean coast. Her image owes its historiography to the birth of French ethnography, a field that emerged out of the Romantic travelogue diaries from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.8 Perhaps one of the most important ideas informing the fantasia surrounding the myth and semiology of Carmen is the corporeality of her image: an eastern — Indian — woman who came, at one time, from a faraway place, well beyond “civilized” European land. This chapter studies the shaping of European consciousness and mythology about the Gypsy dancer through the spectatorship of French Romantic writers who frequented the dance cafés.9
