Chapter Nine
S unday brunch with the family left me exhausted. Jake and I escaped the madness and hunkered down on their backyard patio. I looked over at him. “Promise me one thing bro, when I get old if I act like them, just shoot me.”
He held out his beer and we clinked our bottles.
“Ditto,” he snickered. “So, how are things at the factory? I never see you anymore.”
“SSDD, sometimes I regret ever having taken the reins. But, what would poor old dad have done? He’d have died in his office running that damn place.”
Jake turned to me and grinned. “Hell Carly, that might have been better than being stuck with mom day in and day out. How does he do it? Without a big house to run, I’ll bet he nitpicks him to death.”
“He’s got a way of blocking her out Jake. And, he keeps his whiskey hidden in his office, locked. I think he spends most of the day in there ignoring her. Oh—he also walks a lot. I mean a lot. He’s out of the house before she even gets out of bed.”
Dad joined us on the patio. He pulled up a rocker and plopped into it. “Carly honey, you ready for the dance?”
Jake glanced over at me. “What dance?”
“Father daughter dance at the country club,” I shrugged.
“They still have those?”
I cleared my throat after drinking the last of my beer. “Unfortunately, they do.”
Daddy snickered. “Awe come on baby girl; it’ll be fun. You and me. Still remember how to waltz. I don’t want you stepping on these old toes now. Besides, remember connections. Those dances may seem dumb to you, but you never know when you might make a new connection.”
“You retired daddy, remember?”
He groaned as he pushed himself out of the rocker. “I better get inside before the general misses me.”
Jake slapped his thigh. “You really going to that dance Carly?”
I laughed. “Do I have a choice Jake?”
“I’m glad I wasn’t born you,” he roared.

Driving home all I could think of was what ever possessed me to agree to go to the father daughter dance at the country club. And Jake saying he was glad he hadn’t been born me. If he only knew the half of it—
Later that evening after a long hot shower I rambled through my closet hoping to find something to wear to the father daughter dance. The dance was the coming weekend and I never bothered to take the time to buy a dress. For some reason I’d forgot about it until my father mentioned it earlier in the day. I should have planned better.
The red dress I’d worn to the gay ball jumped out at me. Yes perfect— I ran my hand over the fabric, and it took me back to the dance and the woman in the black dress with the gold mask. I closed my eves and could almost feel her in my arms as we waltzed across the ball room dance floor.
***
We arrived at the country club shortly after eight the last Saturday of October.
