Russell had already taken up residence at what had now become their usual table, in the window of the Red Lion pub.
Neither he nor Joe ever had to pay for their drinks here after helping the barman, Ron, to solve the murder of a drag show cabaret host found dead in the pub’s function room last year.
The Red Lion was close enough to their home and Joe’s work that they could easily meet for a quick catch up, and often came here for lunch. The small table in the window had become their unofficial office.
Russell was halfway through his first pint, waiting for Joe to turn up. “West End Girls” by the Pet Shop Boys playing on the jukebox providing the perfect syncopated soundtrack to the bustle on the street outside.
He’d found a new passion for people-watching, enjoying the wonderful mix of self-proclaimed weirdos that Soho always seemed to attract. He’d even come to recognise his own place in that strange melting pot.
Since Joe’s arrival in his life, Russell had become increasingly content with who he was and how at home he felt in this odd little quarter of London.
Seedy and loud, at almost all times of day or night, Soho was a place where sex shops and coffee shops sat side by side. Populated by celebrities, gangsters, drunks, poets, actors and prostitutes—the smoke-filled bars, clubs and streets all now felt like his domain.
This afternoon, though, the lively hustle out there only seemed to enhance his melancholy. He was worried about his test results, of course, but ever since seeing Jack Eddy’s body in that hotel room this morning, he’d realised that he had no choice but to tell Joe about seeing Jack at the clinic, and the thought filled him with dread.
He had a feeling that whatever had happened between Jack and Adam in the studio yesterday—whatever harsh words had been spoken—had been down, in large part, to Jack’s diagnosis.
Russell knew that it was likely to come out once Harry Palin had finished all of his tests on the body, and it was only right that Joe found out from him, before the papers spread it.
His conversation with Harry Palin had also been swirling around his mind ever since he’d left the hotel room. Harry was convinced that someone had drugged Jack prior to killing him, which made sense of Jack’s injuries, but threw up so many more questions.
Why stage it like that, rather than a straightforward suicide? Why make it look like a sex game gone wrong, unless it was to expose Jack’s sexuality? And why frame Adam Cave unless you wanted to out him at the same time as getting him charged for murder?
Surely it would have been easier to just go to the papers with a story, if outing them both was the end goal. Why stoop to murder?
Russell hoped that Harry could get someone on the police force—obviously not Skinner—to ask the same questions, rather than just jumping to conclusions. After all, if you were
