Chapter 18
“W
e have something on the guy that blew up the house. Did you hear me? I know it’s late—or early, depending on how you look at it. We found something and wanted to let you know right away,” Natasia said, her voice coming over the old phone’s speaker distorted.
“What? Where are you?” I asked, trying to recall if anyone had mentioned what their mission was. It had to have been important since they’d missed the stakeout.
“We’re with Karl at Delta. He told us what happened tonight. We just got back from the CIA. He called us in for a discussion about what they would do with the house, and then the CIA contacted him and said they’d found something. He sent us over there.”
“Wait, what do you mean? What are they going to do with the house?”
My mind flashed to that mysterious object that had been left in my room by the first intruder. It was important, but had it just been a warning from Ivanov that I’d missed while out of the country or was it something else?
“Well, they claimed that it is too dangerous to enter. They couldn’t retrieve any of our things and the fire marshal had condemned it. It will be under police surveillance until they can tear it down in case any of Ivanov’s men try to return.”
My gut twisted. If they tore the house down, I might never know what had been left in my room. It had to be important, since someone had broken in to leave it there. The question was, was it still important?
I bit my lip.
Maybe? Yes.
Was there anything that I could do about it?
Natasia’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. “We just told Karl. One of his guys at the CIA was able to get a picture of the man that set the bomb.”
That broke me from my chain of thoughts.
“What? How? I’ve seen the footage.”
“It was off of a reflection, and they used very sophisticated enhancement software to get it. It’s still grainy, but we’re hoping it might be enough for an ID.”
My mind was racing in a million different directions, and I wasn’t sure which thread to follow. “But the guy never took off his mask.”
“Nyet, mladshaya sistra,” she said. “He never took his mask off inside. Before he entered the house, he picked the lock, and he had his mask off to do so. We caught it off the outside camera. It’s blurry and hard to see, but we’re hoping you might be able to identify him.”
It was a shot in the dark, but I shrugged. I’d try anything at this point. CJ and I hadn’t found any new leads ourselves. After getting tracked and ambushed in the same day…any little shot in the dark was worth it.
“Sure. Do I need to come in?”
There was a beat of silence before she said, “No. I’ll text it to you.”
“This phone gets multimedia texts?”
“Like that would stop you if it didn’t?”
Over the phone, all that carried was her icy tone that scared most people away.
