I lie in the tub, letting the bubbles float over my skin as I relax.

A lot has happened in the last week, and as I compare my life now to the one I had with Sir Evan, I feel real tingles of joy.

Daddy said he would use me mercilessly for sex, and that he has done. But he also said I would come to hate him.

And that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I never expected to have feelings for him, even though most women do end up developing warm fuzzies for the men who own them. But I’ve always been a little hard around the edges. I came here for help, with no idea of how things would turn out. I sure didn’t come to to fall for a man who has yet to declare his ownership of me.

Besides, I watched the way my father treated his servants, like they were no better than the livestock he owned. And those women did so much for him as well as teaching me a lot. I’ve no clue what happened to my mother. I learned from a young age that he sold her to someone else, but he never talked about it much, as though it were a sore subject. I suppose that I was lucky, that I grew up with a father who was affectionate towards me, especially since I didn’t have a mother to do those motherly things. But I still feel like my childhood carved me into a hard woman.

A hard woman who’s quickly becoming soft towards our State Master.

When my father sold me to Sir Evan, I was initially relieved because he has so much power within the community. I thought that maybe, just maybe, he would appreciate me, appreciate what I could offer. That he would see I wasn’t some random servant looking to be of use only within the home. I could do so much more. I could help him run his businesses. I could keep his books or run marketing campaigns.

But he threw me in the cellar like I was nothing more than a nuisance.

At least Master Synister is making me feel as though I hold some value. And the way he came through today for me and Selena proves that he does have a heart, beneath that rough exterior.

I think he appreciates my outspokenness, and I believe that he can be molded. I just need to be brave with him and not hold back. Tell him like it is.

A knock at the door startles me, and when I look up, I see daddy peering into the large bathroom. His eyes move over me in one long, visual lick that sends my toes curling.

“Hello, daddy. Did you want to join me?”

“Not right now. I need you in my chambers, ASAP.”

He pulls the door closed, leaving me feeling hollow. Something is wrong. I don’t know what, but I can tell by the tone of his voice that he’s not himself.

I flick the drain on the tub and wrap a towel around my body, my mind racing with the possibilities.
