Chapter 20
Jae and Verity didnât stop until they nearly reached Vennal, alternating between flying low and dipping below the treetops to walk by the glow of a light Telk stone in Verityâs hand, putting as much distance as they could between them and Farryn.
Verity touched down near a cluster of dwellings. Jae followed. When her feet hit the ground, she sent the winds out around her to seek the presence of others.
âIt should be safe to sleep here,â Verity told her.
Though Jae had agreed to leave Farryn with Verity, she wanted to be sure the rebels didnât have any surprises in store for her. She had, after all, tried to tie them to the Day Court. It was an effort to save them, but she knew they might not see it that way. It was a wonder Verity had traveled all the way to see her.
âThe sun will rise soon,â Jae pointed out, as she sifted through what whispers were brought to her ears. âAnd who lives here?â
She found nothing out of the ordinary, the voices coming from within the dwellings as far as she could tell.
âFaeries I know,â Verity replied. âThey will not report you should any of the Nym come lookingâif they even discover youâre here. You can sleep. Iâve gone plenty of nights without it.â
Jae couldnât muster up enough motivation to respond. Now that they were alone, it felt awkward and strange.
There hadnât been much time to talk as they dashed north, plus the fact that they tried to make as little noise as possible.
âVerity,â Jae started. Verity turned to Jae, expression open but half in the shadows of night as the glow of the Telk stone only illuminated half of it. âI am not sure if I want to go all the way north to Sevelleâs court with you.â
Verity nodded, as if this was what she had expected. âIt is your choice. Perhaps rest will give you more clarity about what direction you want to go.â
Jae sighed. âYes, maybe,â she breathed out, then sat with her back against a tree and closed her eyes, but her mind would not settle. She peeked open her eyelids. The light stone in Verityâs hand had faded, but she could see Verity standing beside her, arms crossed and gaze trained out over the trees.
âWhat is it Sevelle wants?â Jae asked, giving up on resting for the moment. âDoes she truly want me to join her court in the north?â
Verity looked down at her, a curious tilt to her head. âIf that is what you want, I am sure she would welcome you. But is that what you want?â
Jae sighed. âI still do not know what I am going to do. I donât know what I want, but it is not that.â She pointed emphatically back to Farryn.
She didnât know what she expected to happen in Farryn, or what she expected to happen now, but she knew it wasnât what she wanted. She didnât want the spotlight. She didnât want to hide either.
