I had a whole goddamn list, and I intended to write them down and maybe tattoo them on my body when I got back from the track meet so I never again was played for such a fool. The clasp of the chain broke as I ripped it from my neck, not even feeling any pain from it digging into my skin. I dropped it on the blood-red carpeting and hit the up arrow on the wall panel, surprised it wasn’t colored as such from my shattered heart staining the fibers. I stepped inside the elevator, unable to look at the mirrors that excited me not ten minutes ago.

As I turned to push the button for my floor, I stared at the necklace I had loved, and the meaning behind it, as I waited for the doors to close. None of that mattered anymore. I knew my true role and place in life now. Love was for fools and I wouldn’t ever be one again. I might always have a master being in a crest, but there were parts of me I would never allow anyone to own ever again.
