Chapter Nine

“How are you feeling?” Cai asked.

Justin shrugged. “It’s been a couple of days. I feel much better now,” he answered. He’d woken up late, so the others had already had dinner. “Is Duncan still living outside? And where’s Kellam?”

“Yeah, he makes calls and guards the perimeter. Kellam went on a business trip shortly after you arrived. He’ll return whenever he feels like it. It’s always like that,” Cai said as he took Justin’s empty plate to the kitchen sink. “Do you want to eat anything else?”

“It’s fine. Thanks for the food, by the way. It was delicious.” Justin stood and put the chair back in place. “I’m going to check out the garden with Shelly for a bit. If anyone needs anything, you know where to find me.” He made his way to the greenhouse. Now that he didn’t feel so tired and sick, he could finally explore the house. His first target, aside from the secret room he’d found, was where Dario spent most of his time. He was the one who tended for the garden.

Dario looked over his shoulder as he washed his hands with the hose. “Oh, hey. You came to see my work?”

“Yup, and it looks amazing.” Justin took in his surroundings.

It was nothing like he’d ever seen. It was as if this part of the house was made of large windows. Various gravel pathways led to different small, colorful gardens. Each flower type was together. Up ahead, a spiral staircase led to smaller plants visible from down here. All over the enormous space, countless shelves of plants and flowers hung on the glass walls. They occupied half of the lower level, most likely so the plants on the ground could also get some sunlight.

Dario patted Justin’s shoulder and threw a dry cloth into a bucket. “What do you think?”

Justin took a moment to come back to reality before he spoke. “It’s beautiful.” He noticed a small waterfall, which created the sound of running water, just like he’d gotten used to listening to close to his shed.

“Not many people have seen this. I’m glad you look so fascinated by it,” Dario said. “So, can you help me open the windows? It can get pretty humid in here.”

“Lead the way.” Justin followed Dario up the spiral staircase. He saw Dario opening the windows on the right, so he went to the left. “How much time do you spend in here?”

Dario hummed. “Well, not as much starting next month. I talked with Nickolas and he’s going to invest in this. Next week, I’m going with him to get some stuff for humidity control, to buy better material to increase the lifespan of the plants, and many other things.” He looked over at Justin when he didn’t say anything. “Justin?”

“There’s…” Justin could only point at the semi-opaque glass in front of him. Because of the light inside, he could see menacing eyes and sharp teeth, but not as razor-sharp as Nickolas’s could get. How could this be? They were on the second floor.
