Chapter 17

Brayden Tucker

Irolled over and my body jerked to not fall off the couch. I slept on it last night after looking through files for several hours. There wasn’t a paper in the file that I hadn’t read several times already. The sun shone through my window and I felt like I just woke up on a camping trip. My body was sore, my teeth weren’t brushed, and I needed a shower. It probably wasn’t healthy for a person to feel like that in their own home.

I doubted that Mike had any luck with Mark Stevenson last night, but curiosity got the best of me. I looked at my phone on the armrest of the couch. I knew it was Saturday, but unless Mike did a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree turn, my bet was that he was up and following Mark already. I opened my recent calls and scrolled to Mike’s name. It started to ring, and I thought about which grumpy way he’d answer the phone. After a few rings, the call connected.

“Hello,” a familiar voice said. I knew it wasn’t Mike, but I would recognize that voice anywhere. I cleared my throat.

“Hello, Missy,” I replied. “I didn’t expect you to answer.” The awkwardness of the second line made me shake my own head. I was as unsmooth as ever.

“I didn’t expect to talk to you either, Brayden,” Missy chuckled. “My dad left early this morning and left his cell phone in his chair. My guess is that he slept in it last night, and it fell out of his pocket. Do you want me to give him a message?”

“Um… yeah. Just tell him to call me when he gets home,” I said.

“Will do,” Missy paused. I thought she was about to say goodbye. “So, how have you been? How’s the big city?”

“I’ve been pretty good,” I lied. I’d felt like a hamster on a wheel for the past year of my life. I ran as fast as I could at work, but I got nowhere in my personal life. “Milwaukee is different than Eagle River. I’m not saying it’s better or worse, it’s just different. More people equals more crimes, so work is a lot busier here than there. I do miss my quiet jogs in the Northwoods. The city is never quiet. How about you? How’s Eagle River been this past year?”

“Honestly, it’s been better than I thought it would be. I was dreading moving home after college. I thought I’d be reverting back to high school. That really hasn’t been the case. My dad, well you know him better than anyone, could have been a pain, but he’s actually been pretty good to live with this past year. He lets me do my thing, and he doesn’t try to interject himself into my life. As long as I make dinner sometimes, he stays pretty happy,” she laughed.

The awkwardness from the opening statement was already gone. That’s the way it seemed to go with Missy. I never knew what to say, but it only took a few moments for us to be back to normal.
