Chapter 8: Cameron

I raise my head from my plate of garlic salmon and rice to find Phoenix’s eyes piercing into mine.

“What?” I ask, my hand reaching for my drink.

“I was just wondering if you were going to bring up what happened last night,” Phoenix said with one eyebrow raised.

Storm’s head flashed from one brother to the next. “What? What happened?”

Phoenix was a little too eager to answer with a twisted grin. “He left us last night without a word and a woman on his side.” Storm’s eyes widened as he placed all his attention on me.

I have only myself to blame. I should have known better when Phoenix asked me to join him for lunch today. We met at the quiet little restaurant that was part of Stony Bed and Breakfast. The meals here usually waft into the entire bed-and-breakfast with its mouth watering aroma, but I like the cozy feel of the restaurant. Staff are friendly and always willing to assist with a smile.

“I take it you caught another one last night,” Storm says, eyeing me for signs of the truth.

This is where I would usually boast about my conquest, but with Kayla, it doesn’t seem right. I shake my head and release a heavy sigh. “Kayla isn’t like that. She’s different from other women.”

Our table goes silent and I suspect it’s the quiet before the storm.

“There is no freaking way.” Phoenix keeps his mouth open even after he finishes speaking. “Storm, I think our brother may actually have feelings for this one.”

“I never thought I would have lived long enough to see this day.” Storm joined his brother with his dramatic expressions.

I ignore both my brothers’ facial expressions and explain something that has been bothering me. “Kayla has been through so much already. Her entire family died in a fire when she was sixteen.” I shake my head. “I don’t want to hurt her.”

Storm’s expression is serious now. “What makes you think you would?”

A slight chuckle escapes me before I say. “Come on. You guys know me. I don’t have serious relationships.”

Phoenix smacks his hand on the table. “It’s about time you started. You need to have some stability in your life. Settle down.”

I raise my hands. “I’m fine with flings.”

“Obviously you’re not, else we wouldn’t even be having this conversation right now.” Storm holds my gaze. “I think you care about her and you’re just trying to convince yourself that you are not. Listen...” He puts his elbows on the table and leans in closer. “I think you need to try it. You might be happy.”

Storm and Phoenix have a point, but I don’t know if I’m built for relationships.
