Caleb waited until Laysha was asleep, and then he slipped out of bed and headed out to the backyard, where he studied the layout of the land. Graynor was at his side, always watchful, always wary. âYou hear it too, donât you, buddy?â
The dog wagged his tail. âYeah, somebodyâs out there. Somebodyâs watching. Somebodyâs always, always watching. The question is, why and how does this relate to anything.â
Was it tied to the house where theyâd been at with the dead body? Was it the War Dog? Or was it something that Laysha had done on her own that had pissed off somebody? She did work for lawyers, and, as much as she said that wasnât a dangerous job, if anybody wanted to get back at somebody, it wasnât too hard to follow them from work directly to home. And lawyers were often the ones who were targeted. Would Laysha, as a paralegal in the office, be enough for a disgruntled client? Who knew? People were ten bucks short of a load sometimes when it came to clear thinking. The bottom line was, he didnât trust that she was safe, and he was out here to make sure that she was.
Caleb, Graynor by his side, wandered the property, looking from all angles to see if heâd overlooked anything. It was a wonderful place, with a creek at the far back corner. A place to sit and just mellow out. As he stood here, looking at it, Graynor nudged Calebâs leg with his nose. Caleb frowned because, right in front of him, were bullet casings. âGood boy.â After taking several photos with his phone, he carefully pocketed the physical evidence to hand off to the detective. He crouched to study the footprints around the area and noted that somebody had been here for a long time. Theyâd actually stalked her and sat here, waiting for either her or him to move.
Definitely a concern and he didnât know how long her stalker had been here, but these footprints were deep impressions. He thought back to when there had been any rain. Thereâd been a little rain a couple of nights ago but he didnât know how much. However, with the creek right beside here, it could have flooded upriver and come down here, overflowing and soaking into the ground. A little bit more tentatively he checked another spot on the creek bed, and, of course, with his weight, he sank in fairly deep.
So the stalker didnât have to be here for all that long. But, as Caleb checked further, he also noted new impressions, where the guy had knelt and propped up his rifle. Gaynor sniffed furiously but remained quiet. Frowning and hating to see such evidence, and yet knowing this was a necessary part of his job, Caleb searched for any other signs. He found a tiny bit of plaid material, one of the red hunter plaids, caught on a branch. He quickly took a photo of it and then of the footprints, of the knee impressions, and sent them off to Badger.
