Chapter Fourteen

Stepping inside the McKinnon kitchen half an hour later, Faith was startled to find her oldest sister still awake and sipping tea at the table in the middle of the room.

“Faith?” Harmony frowned as she looked up from the paperback book she’d been reading. “You’re early,” she remarked, glancing at the face of the clock above the sink. “I didn’t figure you’d be home for a couple more hours.”

Closing the door behind her, Faith smiled tightly. “It was a long night for me,” she murmured, blushing as she tried to control her wavering voice.

Squinting out the kitchen window, Harmony raised an eyebrow. “Was that Cain following you home?” she asked as she watched red taillights disappear down their driveway.

Nodding, Faith felt her blush deepen. “Yeah,” she admitted hoarsely.

Crossing her arms over her chest, Harmony stared at her sister. “What gives, Faith? I can tell by the look on your face that something happened. Are you okay? I swear to God, I’ll kill Cain myself if he’s done something else to hurt you,” she threatened darkly, her dark eyes flashing dangerously.

Glancing into the darkened living room, Faith whispered, “Where’s Honor?” The last thing she wanted to do was traumatize her baby sister with her sex life, but she desperately needed to talk to someone that would understand. Married and subsequently divorced, she knew Harmony would at least hear her out without judgment.

“Already in bed,” Harmony answered. “She had a headache. Heaven’s asleep, too. It’s just you and me, kiddo.”

“Thank God,” Faith breathed, dropping her purse on the floor and sagging against the counter. “You wouldn’t believe the night I’ve had,” she told her sister with a tiny shake of her head. “Harmony, I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I really don’t. I feel like I’m spinning out of control and can’t catch ahold of anything that’s steady and real. I’m afraid to trust my instincts. They’ve already failed me once before,” she groaned, shoving a hand through her hair and tightening digging her nails into her scalp.

“Okay,” Harmony soothed. “Sit down and start from the beginning,” she ordered gently. “We’ll figure things out together.” Waiting until her younger sibling had pulled out a chair and sat down, Harmony asked again, “What happened?”

“Cain and I… we…. We had sex tonight.”

Stunned, Harmony blinked. Okay, she’d been prepared to hear many things, but not that. “O-kay,” she said carefully. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Or the kind of thing that I need to go find Daddy’s old gun and blow Cain’s nuts off for?”

Laughing at the utter sincerity in her sister’s words, Faith shook her head. “Definitely not option number three. I might want to use those nuts again at a future date.”

“Well, that’s something,” Harmony replied with a tiny grin. “I take it that the sex was good?” She winked at Faith and wriggled her eyebrows.

Sighing, Faith nodded. “The sex was amazing, Harm. The sex was always amazing with Cain. Sex was never our problem. It felt like coming home again,” she softly confided.
