I’ve got my butt dug down in my big recliner as far as it will go. This boat doesn’t have a single seatbelt and I want to make sure I’m firmly in place for our first jump.

We’re going to make a number of superluminal jumps because our engines aren’t equipped to travel at full superluminal speeds for any stretch of time. So, I’m anchoring myself.

Not that being well anchored is going to make a tiny bit of difference if the ship rips apart.

So many ways to die. Getting lost in the wormhole. Getting discombobulated. Being shredded where you stand, even if the ship survives. The ship buckling and spewing us into space might be kinder than some of the etheric consequences.

So much needs to be perfect for a successful jump. I’m counting on our energy crystals to fix any discrepancies. Every cell of the ship and everyone on it has to travel at the same speed or we could pop out the other sides with our heads literally up our fucking asses.

“Okay team.” I grit my teeth and start flicking switches, putting all power to the engine. The rest of the crew are all firmly buckled down somewhere on the ship. Everyone is freaking out but at least we are finally ready.

“Okay.” I whisper to myself, flicking the last switches. “Ready.”

I put my hand on to the touchpad and whisper softly, “Jump.”

Light screams into my eyes. I feel like I’m drowning in it and its burning me as I try to breathe it in. I should be screaming in horror, but I can’t breathe. I feel pressure and pain, like I’m being stretched in every direction at once.

That’s it. We’re fucked. Goodbye world and good luck Llyron. We never knew you!

I try to take in a breath and when it doesn’t burn me, I open my eyes hesitantly. There is only the darkness of space beyond the window. I pound the intercom.

“Guys? You all okay out there? Did we do it?”

I hear groans erupting throughout the ship. I figure everyone’s okay. But did we jump?

Just as I start checking my instruments Rustbucket screams like something is cutting her open. She rocks so hard I get tossed out of my chair. Everyone else starts screaming and yelling.

Maybe she survived the jump but now she’s no longer space worthy… If we are going to split in two then I’m going out watching the stars. I climb back into my seat with great difficulty as the little Rustbucket twists and grinds against some great external force.

That’s when I see the ship.

She’s narrow and sort of spear shaped, but she has odd patches that bear strange colors and awkward seams where she was welded together with other parts. It’s firing on us, making Rustbucket churn in the sky. If they keep it up, she’ll just dissolve. I pound my comms.

“Hey! Mother fucker! Can you hear me? Why are you firing on us!”

The comms crackle but nothing comes through. The crystals are charged so it’s got to be our radios that are damaged.
