Thanatos

I push the prospect out of my head as I ride. I could feel his fucking stare boring into me as I waited to get on my bike. I understand the anger that surrounds him. I did a shitty thing. I’m man enough to admit it, but I can’t take it back and I won’t. I can’t allow him to crawl under my skin. I can’t allow him to have that hold over me.

I’m damaged.

I know it.

I feel it.

There’s a poison running through my veins, thick, clogging, like molasses, stopping me from letting him in. Yet unlike poison this self-hatred can’t be drawn out of me. It soaks into my very cells. I can never be fixed. I’m beyond repair.

Even if I could open up to him, I won’t. I’m a monster. The worst kind. I don’t feel anything for the men I’ve killed. If I was to murder Isaac right now, I wouldn’t blink.

At least…

I wouldn’t have.

Now, I’m not sure, and that terrifies me. He’s already making his way under my walls.

As we ride, I try to keep my focus on the task ahead. I don’t need to be distracted, not when one mistake could be the end of me, the end of one of my men.

Approaching the Damaris estate, the huge gated house where they run their enterprise from, has me sliding my game face on. I shove Isaac out of my head and bring my bike to a stop on a small lay-by at the side of the road. It’s out of sight of any of the surrounding properties, not that there are many out here. It’s fairly deserted, which is probably why the Damaris conduct their business out here. No nosey neighbours.

We should be hidden.

At least long enough to make our attack and get the fuck out of there.

The others pull in behind me, Hades moving his bike in next to me. I don’t look as the van takes its place behind the motorcycles. I don’t need to look. I can feel his gaze fucking spearing my back.

I climb off the bike and tug my helmet off, leaning it on the seat. I ignore Isaac climbing out of the van, and give my attention to Brewer instead. The brother seems to be full of nervous energy as he opens the back doors of the van.

“You think those fuckers have any idea we’re here?” he asks as he picks up a gun and hands it to me.

“I sure as fuck hope not.”

Surprise is the only thing we have going for us. We don’t have numbers on our side, but neither does Damaris. It’s why we’ve both chipped away at each other’s forces, hoping to gain the upper hand. We’re fairly evenly matched men wise.

This is beyond the pale, though.

A direct attack on the clubhouse can’t be ignored. There has to be repercussions for that. We let one faction attack us, others will come at us, seeing us as weak.

Live or die here, this is necessary to defend our position.
