Chapter 15

Mary stared glumly out the window as George drove her home. The weather was gray and dreary. Trying to go along with Anna’s wishes for privacy, she had remained talking to George for quite a while before leaving. They were going slow, on Mary’s suggestion, so that she could watch for Anna walking along the side of the road, but there was no sign of her.

She decided to look at the bright side. “You know, George, this wasn’t necessarily as major a fiasco as it appeared to be. Even though they didn’t connect this time, at least some initial contact was made.

George said nothing. Mary looked at him. “Don’t you agree?”

He shrugged. “They made contact, but it only drove a bigger wedge between them.”

“I still think we did the right thing, though. If I had it all to do over again, I’d do exactly the same thing.”

“You would?”

“Yes. Absolutely,” Mary said with the self-assurance that, she realized, often belied how very unsure she was. “We tried. That’s the important thing. And I just know that Jack regrets what he did and is going to apologize to David.”

George frowned. “You only just met Jack, Mary. And even if you’d known him for a dozen years, he’s different with David than he is with everyone else. What David said today was true. Jack’s always...ruled David with an iron fist. I don’t know why he’s like that, but he is. I can’t see him ever admitting to his son that he was in the wrong.”

“My Arnold was the same way...a total pushover for Anna, a brick wall with our son, Michael. But when push comes to shove, even brick walls will crumble. You’ll see, George. Admittedly, you know Jack and I don’t, but I do know about fathers and sons.”

They pulled up into Mary’s short, steep driveway. She stared at the front door, losing her nerve a little. “Mothers and daughters are another thing. I’m probably in for a major tongue-lashing from Anna.”

“Would you mind if I came up with you? I’d like to apologize to her.”

“For what?”

George shut off the engine, the lines in his face deeply furrowed. He answered quietly, “For how bad things went back at my house and...how I stared at her at Elaine’s party.” He averted his eyes. “I guess it was difficult for me, turning fifty. Still being childless and single. I should have known better than to try to flirt with someone half my age.”

“Oh, she won’t be half your age for another year yet.” As soon as she’d finished speaking, Mary realized that she should have thought before speaking. She added hastily, “But I’m quite certain she’s too busy fuming about having such a meddlesome mother to worry about anything else.”

“Nevertheless, I owe both of you an apology.” George’s voice sounded even gloomier than it had before Mary put in her two-cents’ worth.

“All right. Come on up. I can probably use the company to diffuse the focus on my over-involvement.” She got out of the car and smiled at him as she waited on the top step.
