CHAPTER NUMBER THREE

The next morning, Shayla rolled over and studied Vincent as he still slept. With his deeply tanned skin, square jaw and proud nose, he really was fine. She'd had no intentions of sexing him last night, that's just how things had turned out. She wondered how he'd view her now. She wondered where their relationship stood. She wondered if to him she was just a one-night-stand.

She was surprised when his eyes slowly opened. Despite everything they'd shared the previous evening, she suddenly became shy.

He grinned at her. “Good morning, beautiful.”

She returned his smile.

He propped himself up on one elbow. His eyes met hers. They suddenly became serious. “Shayla,” he began, “I hope you don't regret last night.”

She didn't respond immediately. She wasn't sure of what to say.

He reached in and pushed a wayward lock of hair back from her lovely face. “I need to let you know up front that I don't take what happened between us last night lightly. To me, you're not just some roll in the hay. I'm pretty much sure that I'm starting to have feelings for you.”

To that she frowned. “You can't be having feelings for me Vincent. That was only our first date.”

His face remained serious. “Well, let's just say I think we have something special between us. Something we can build into something great.”

She began thinking about his words. Then she smiled at him. If she were completely honest with herself, she'd have to admit that she had felt something for him, too.

Suddenly, she was pleased to hear him actually reaffirming what she'd been a little too frightened to acknowledge.

“Okay, Vincent...say I tell you that I felt something special, as well...then what?”

“Then I'd say that we would both be fools if we didn't at least explore it.” He paused for a moment. “Look, Shayla. I'm gonna lay all my cards on the table. I'm thirty-two and I've run the field for a long time. You've read the stuff about me and other women in the tabloids—some of it is true, some of it is not. But like I told you last night, I'm a changed man, now. I'm looking to settle down.” He looked at her. “You have a lot of the characteristics that I'm looking for in a woman—in a mate.”

To say she was surprised by his raw and honest words would have been an understatement. She was shocked.

He frowned. “I hope I'm not scaring you away, but everything I just said is the truth.”

She sat up and pulled the covers up to her chest. Then she looked down at him. “So, in other words you're looking for a wife?”

He hadn't actually thought of it like that, but that's exactly what he was looking for. He grinned at her. “Yeah.”

She shook her head. She had honestly been rethinking her desire to snag a wealthy husband. “I can't exactly say that I'd be good wife material for a man like yourself, Vincent. We're from two very different worlds. It's a really good chance we wouldn't work out.
