Moments later, Chantelle's phone rang. Sure enough, it was the driver, right on time, maybe even a few minutes on the early side.

“Good morning, Ms. Wilson,” he said smoothly. “Everything all set for your departure to the airport?”

“Uh huh,” Chantelle replied, definitely unsure of how to act with a limo driver she had no idea about the protocol for that scenario for sure. Then she thought about how big the car would be – surely it wouldn't be a stretch?

“We do have a bunch of luggage though...I wasn't sure if that was OK or not.”

“Oh!” he said. “Should have said something. I'll be right up.”

“Huh?” Chantelle said, realizing she was definitely under informed about the protocol. “You don't have to do that...really.”

The driver paused. “It’s my job, Ms. Wilson.” His voice lightened, and she could tell he was trying to sound casual about the whole thing. “I would actually get in all sorts of trouble with Mr. Taylor if I didn't carry your bags down.”

“You would?”

“Definitely...do you mind buzzing me up?”

“Umm, sure,” Chantelle said, looking over at Denise and shrugging. “Just a second.”

She walked over to the panel next to the door and hit the buzzer, and suddenly her phone went dead.

“Looks like we're having a guest,” she said, turning to Denise.

“Huh?”

“Driver. He said he wants to carry our bags out,” Chantelle explained. “In fact, he says he has to.”

“Has to?” Denise repeated.

“He gets in trouble if he doesn't” Chantelle replied, shrugging again. “Don't ask me to explain any of this. I have no clue.”

“Me neither.”

Chantelle's apartment was on the second floor, so it didn't take long for the knock on the door to happen.

“Ms. Wilson?” the driver said, tipping his cap when he opened it. “I'm your driver, Alvin Williams.”

She nodded. “Mr. Williams.”

“Please, call me Al,” he said, glancing behind Chantelle and nodding at Denise. He was older than Chantelle had thought he'd be, maybe mid-forties, and definitely very professional looking in his dark suit, which was way more expensive-looking than she expected.

“So the bags would be where?”

“Oh!” Chantelle exclaimed. She pointed next to the kitchen table, where Denise had put her bags next to Chantelle's. “Right here, actually.”

She looked at the four bags and realized that they were a load. “You sure you can handle this?” she asked. “We'd be happy to help.

Denise nodded as well, but he quickly waved them off.

“Absolutely no problem,” he assured her, giving both Denise and Chantelle a slight smile. “No trouble at all.”

“Long as you're sure,” Chantelle replied, thinking about some of the heavier stuff she'd thrown in. She was definitely going to have to get better at packing if this kind of thing became a habit.

“Without a doubt,” Al said, striding confidently over to the bags and slinging them onto his shoulders. “All set.”

Chantelle arched her eyebrows, definitely impressed. He was stronger than he looked and then some, and they headed out into the hallway, drawing a couple of stares from students heading to and from classes.

“There's an elevator,” Denise said as they made their way down the hall.
