Chapter Seven

Seven days. There were only seven days left of Darby being alone with Rick to work on this project. Very little had progressed as far as closure was concerned even though they were moving at a good pace with their work. His demeanor went from sheer loathing, to quietly being used to ignoring her in his space. He spoke only if it involved the bakery, or the plans he had in terms of the design and the cost. Darby had so many ideas to share, but Rick pretended to be completely disinterested. He couldn’t lie though; Darby had some wonderful ideas for the space. She had a good eye for designs and layouts, and was more helpful than he felt even he deserved.

Even with all of this and with knowing that she was still the sensitive but fun loving woman he once knew, his heart remained frozen. Rick refused to budge. He had allowed the years to age his pain like a dismal and dizzying wine.

Even now with the way that she looked in the dim lights of the office of the business that he ran. Her hair was out, and flowing wildly about her face. Her plump lips were glossed and were just a shade pinker than normal; they looked even more full and pouty. Her bright eyes seemed even more brilliant tonight. Or was it her eyelashes? There was something almost enchanting about her that night that Rick couldn’t put his finger on.

He ignored it of course. It was easier that way. It was why he hadn’t had any further meetings with her at his home. He had to maintain his composure and be as professional as he would allow. Telling her she looked beautiful would tear down the walls he had built up in order to keep her out.

“We’ve got a really good start with this. We can get finished with the last of the outdoor plans tomorrow night,” Rick said. It was just after 11, but he was tired.

“Yeah, it’s getting pretty late,” Darby agreed. Rick was going to offer to walk her to her car, but he stopped himself. Their cars were in the parking garage below the building. They would be going in the same direction anyway.

Darby had collected her things, and she waited by the door until Rick had packed his briefcase, turned off the lights in his office, and was ready to leave. They walked out of the darkened office space in silence, and entered the elevator in the same way.

“Thank you for helping us. I know you didn’t have to,” Darby said. She was standing so close to him. Rick could almost feel the hairs on her arm brush against his button up shirt. She had turned enough to be looking at him, but to also be facing the doors of the elevator still.

Rick needed to bite his tongue. He was preparing to say a snarky remark, but he thought better of it. She was thanking him, and the fact that she still maintained her sweetness despite how he was treating her melted him a little.
