Chapter Six

Layla applied to a few jobs, and most of the people seemed pretty disinterested. Maybe it was because of the holiday season, but most of them seemed bored with Layla. She wanted to impress them, but they seemed to only care about the fact that she didn’t look the type, and she didn’t have a degree that worked for them. She did get an interview at a factory, and when she got there, the interviewer looked at her with a glance.

“You’re Layla?” he asked.

“Yep, that’s me. Is there something wrong?” she asked.

“No. Let’s do this,” the person said. He looked bored out of his mind, and suddenly, Layla didn’t feel very confident in herself and the way this was going.

The interview that she had was pretty straightforward. However, he didn’t seem to be interested in what she had to offer, and she felt like there was something wrong. Was it her? Was it the fact that she didn’t have much to offer?

“Well, we’ll call you when we choose someone. Don’t get your hopes up though,” he said.

When Layla heard that, she immediately felt worried. Usually, if someone liked her and thought she had potential for the job, they would say it. However, those words were not what she wanted to hear, and already she felt as if she was getting dismissed. Would she get the job? At this point, she honestly didn’t know, and she could feel apprehensive about not getting the job.

Layla had work later on that day, and she didn’t know if things would be okay. Sure enough, she felt like she was being attacked on all sides the second she took the floor, being asked barbed questions and being harassed by the customers. This wasn’t even worth it anymore, and Layla just went to work since it was the only thing that she could do to make money. It was awful, and she didn’t know what to do about it.

Layla was off the register thankfully two days later. That’s what was really nice, for she could spend the time folding up shirts and such. However, one older woman came up to her, looking at her up and down and staring at her with a glance.

“Are you sure that you work here? You don’t look like you fit the part,” the woman said.

“Well I have the name tag miss. If you need something, I can help,” Layla replied.

“Fine. Do you have twenty of those shirts?” she pointed to the ones in her hand.

“I don’t of that size, but I have twenty total. Do you need them of one size?” Layla asked.

“Yes. I can’t believe you don’t carry that much! I mean, I thought that you would do your job better. Maybe that’s why you’re just a lowly folder. You can’t do anything right, so they give you the grunt work,” she said.

Robert walked on in, searching for Layla. He had been angry that she was irrational in not taking her money. But he later realized where she was coming from.
