8 – The Confession

Melanie considered calling Aaron and asking him to meet her for dinner that night, but then she remembered he told her he had plans with some law student he met at a bodega near his apartment. She knew that if she insisted he would meet her instead, but he'd be anxious because he'd know she only ask him to break his plans for something important.

She also told herself that he deserved to have one last date without the idea of a baby hanging over his head. Then she wondered what his law student date would say if she knew he'd knocked up his friend during a work retreat and laughter bubbled up inside her, spilling out until she had to press her face against her pillow to keep from almost shrieking. It wasn’t normal laughter, true laughter, but rather the almost hysterical reaction that came from not wanting to cry. By the time it subsided, she was exhausted and not in any sort of shape to have a rational discussion.

When Melanie woke up Saturday morning, her throat was scratchy and her head was pounding. She felt eerily like she had a hangover without the benefit of having been drunk the night before. She stayed in bed all day, but managed to keep herself from sinking into a depression by spending most of her time sleeping. She did however, made herself wake up enough in the afternoon to call Aaron and ask him to meet her for lunch the next day. He agreed amicably enough that she was certain he'd gotten laid. It was on the tip of her tongue to ask if he'd used a condom this time, but he wouldn't have understood why she asked and it wouldn't really have been funny even if he had. Instead, she kept her voice normal and said that she'd see him at The Top Spot, their usual weekend meeting place.

She'd never been nervous picking out clothes when going to see Aaron, but as she stood in front of her closet ninety minutes before they were supposed to meet, her stomach was in knots and she had absolutely no clue what to wear. She didn't want to go with something dressy because she rarely wore outfits like that anyway, and never to something like a Sunday lunch. But anything too casual made her feel like she was downplaying the importance of what she was going to tell him. Finally, after going through her entire wardrobe twice, she settled for a pair of nice jeans and her favorite button-up shirt. In a few months, she wouldn't be able to wear either. Not, she reminded herself, that she'd decided she was definitely going through with it. She was sticking to her original decision to not to make any choices until after she'd talked to Aaron. The only thing she had done was call her OBGYN and leave a message requesting an appointment as soon as possible. No matter what she decided, she'd need to see Dr.
