Chapter 5

Minnie

I need a smoke. All of this is too much and my hand is shaking so bad I am struggling to pull the lighter out of my purse. I notice the faint light of the recorder shining through the fabric of the purse.

It had been on that whole time. I had done it, I got a full confession from the ringleader of the Savage Saints drug trade. My mission was successful and faster than anyone would have expected, so why did I feel like garbage?

You humanized Buzz too much, you idiot. You let yourself get close to catch him and you went and sympathized with the enemy. Buzz was a drug dealer. He could dress up what he did with the money with all the charity he likes, but what he sells ruins people’s lives, and it was my job to make sure he went to jail for his crimes.

Is thinking about criminals as human really a bad thing? To empathize with and humanize someone, to understand why they did what they did, wouldn’t that mean I would better know how to address the reason for crimes, rather than just punishing criminals after the crime happened?

These ideas called into question the whole point of going into law enforcement. I wanted to help, but would arresting these people do more harm than good? What should I do?

I decided to use the contact line that had been established before I went undercover and to talk to SAC Leon. The captain was my immediate superior and the man I looked up to the whole time I was in the academy.

Most of the club members were in church, which meant I could slip out with relative ease. They had established a payphone nearby that they had bugged. They had bugged it in case the Saints used it for business, they didn’t but we kept it in case I needed help.

I go inside, close the shutter door, and pick up the receiver. “Code Aries, I repeat, Code Aries. This is Special Agent Mary Turner, DEA and I need to be put in touch with my superior, SAC Francis Leon.”

On the other end of the line, there was a long series of clicks, confirming that the agents who had been listening were patching me through. After almost two minutes the phone starts ringing and then an older voice answers the other end. “SAC Leon.”

“Sir, this is Special Agent Turner,” I say quietly. I can see through all the sides of the phone booth, but it didn’t hurt to be cautious all the same.

“Turner? Are you alright? Have you been compromised?” Leon asks, his voice has a touch of concern but mostly unwavering.

“No sir, my presence remains unknown,” I inform him.

The voice then turns to frustration. “Then why are you taking the risk to contact me.”

“Well, sir, I had questions about the nature of the mission-”

“Questions? What the hell is there to question, Turner. Do you or do you not have the information yet?”

“I do, sir,” I answer honestly.
