Once we’re finished, we take our coats and head outside. The driver is waiting in directly in front of the restaurant’s entrance, and he opens up the door for me. Silas takes my hand and guides me into the car. It’s all very, very surreal. I mean, I’ve never been in a restaurant where they don’t tell you how much dinner is before you eat. I guess numbers are irrelevant to a man like Silas. He probably doesn’t think twice before buying whatever he wants. And to have someone waiting for you to finish dinner so that you don’t have to stand out in the cold is amazing. All of these little luxuries impress me, but he doesn’t seem to think twice about it.

“I’ve retrieved your car and arranged for it to be parked in the hotel’s parking,” he tells me as we pull into traffic. “You told me you didn’t pack anything, so I took the liberty of sending a few things over for you.”

“Thank you,” I say. “But you don’t have to do this. Really.”

“I enjoy taking care of things,” was his reply.

I fall into silence. Everything that’s happened so far makes me feel incredibly mixed up inside. It started out so grim this morning, and now it feels like I’ve landed in a fairy tale. And then there was the out of this world sex this afternoon. I mean, I don’t know what this is all supposed to mean. I know in my heart that Silas Rutherford is a charming man who enjoys his women. I’m probably just another notch on his belt. So why does it not feel that way? Am I just that inexperienced?

And then there’s this coat. It’s a deep plum color, with soft fur around the hood. It’s not Silas’ that’s for sure, which means it must have belonged to another woman. What happened to her, I wonder? Was she bought for a night of fun too? If that’s the case, then there definitely can’t be anything going on between us, even if our meal together was the best date I’d ever had. After all, relationships don’t come out of things like these. It’s just too good to be true.

There’s a surprise waiting for me when we get back to the penthouse. Spread across the couches in the living room are paper bags from Saks, Nordstrom, and Agent Provocateur.

“What’s this?” I ask.

“Reeves told me you didn’t have any luggage with you, so I took the liberty of picking out a few things for you to wear while you’re here,” Silas says. “Go ahead. Take a look. It’s all yours.”

I step uncertainly towards the bags. These are high end things, I can tell, by the fancy tissue wrapping alone. I sit and pull one of the bags towards me. Inside is a gorgeous cashmere sweater, soft as a cloud. I know I could never wear something like this. It just feels like it’s made of money, and I’d never be able to wear it in case I got a stain.
