CHAPTER TWENTY

There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.

—Friedrich Nietzsche

With all the self-discipline she could muster, Chris decided to abstain from texting Randy to see if he was on schedule with Julie. She’d given him fairly explicit instructions and wasn’t due to rendezvous with him back at his place for another two hours.

“Whatever you do to her before I get there is up to you, pervert.” She’d concluded their earlier call with her best effort at sounding light about the whole thing.

Texting him to check in on how this trumped up pho-fantasy abduction was going could only lead to two possible outcomes: One, he was doing just fine with it. Two, he was bumbling through it, running into problems, and would likely ask her to come meet him far earlier that had been planned. Chris was resolved to the reality that the second scenario was the most likely one.

Can’t be everywhere at once. And even if Julie immediately saw through it —or didn’t believe me when I told her Randy was only coming over to grab her on his way over to meet me, the dumb fuck has still probably figured something out.

Her final decision regarding the matter had been to believe that if anything was wrong, if indeed it wasn’t at least playing out close to how she’d envisioned it, she would have heard from one or the other. Randy or Julie would have phoned, texted, or both—neither had, and at that moment it was all Chris needed to stay the course. It was too close to six, and if she didn’t hustle, there was a good chance she’d not arrive at the Elite Two Meet offices before Alicia bailed.

Seeing Alicia immediately was the only option. Repeated attempts to reach her had gone unrequited and had left Chris with no other choice but to put herself physically in front of her.

Point A to Point B travel at that early evening hour in the city was tricky. There was no real rhyme or reason to what mode might actually be fastest. A cab might, the train—but ultimately the only absolutely certain methodology to an unobstructed journey was to walk. It might take longer, but at least one could be sure she was the sole decision maker. Short of cataclysmic catastrophic events—the kind that shut down city blocks—the only delay on city travels made by foot is the mass of humanity who is privy to the same guiding logic on destination arrival best practices.

As luck would have it, there was a steady drizzle falling, just enough damp inconvenience to keep the sheepish within their offices for a while longer, waiting out the “storm.” The herd was thinner than the norm. Still, Chris found herself rooting for the skies to open up—few things kept the sidewalks more passable than a solid rain bomb.

As she maneuvered her way through the limited hustle and bustle, her conviction to believing Alicia would be pleased to see her
