Chapter Eleven

Two weeks had passed since Vincent had taken Alison off to New York to start renovations at the hotel there, and things seemed to have changed between the two of them. He wasn’t sure why but she seemed even more put off by even the sight of him. They’d spent a week there while she toured the rooms, came up with ideas and explored the furniture and fabric that was available in the city.

Elise had found a fast friend in Alison, and the two of them had been as thick as thieves during the week they’d all spent there together. Vincent could barely get a word in edgewise when the three of them had to work together.

Then there was that week with nothing. He’d flown Alison back to Chicago, and Elise had come along to get back into the arms of her fiancé back in the city they were all from. Alison had dived into her work, and he hadn’t seen her or heard from her in days, not until he called her to arrange the flight to the hotel he wanted her to work on in Denver. He knew she’d been working the whole time because the staff in New York was getting instructions and diagrams about the new decor that was quickly being put into place, but she hadn’t called or emailed him even once.

Maybe that shouldn’t have bothered him, but it did a little. He looked forward to hearing from her, and now that they were headed off to Denver, he hoped he would get the chance to talk to her. He wasn’t picking her up this time. She’d said she had her own ride to the airport, and she would meet him at the gate where they were planning to take off. He’d been waiting for about fifteen minutes when she arrived.

“About time, Alison.” Vincent glanced up from his watch to the young woman with a sly grin. “I was starting to believe you were going to skip out on me.”

Alison let her suitcase rest beside her as she shrugged. “There’s no way I was missing out on an all-expenses paid trip to Denver. I’ve never been there before. So what death defying feat are you planning for Colorado? Any chance it will be something that will keep you out of my hair and sight for the entire trip?”

She was joking with him, at least a little, even if there was some underhandedness. That had to be a first. He had to admit he liked the way it looked on her.

“Skiing.” He smiled broadly as she raised an eyebrow in his direction. “From a helicopter.”

“Oh, I should have known.” She grabbed the handle of her suitcase and headed towards the small gate where his private plane was boarding. “Come on, we have a flight to make.”

He followed her down the ramp onto the plane, letting the attendant stash their bags in the proper compartment on the plane. Vincent had no idea what hand changed in the way she reacted towards him, but it was a nice change.
