Chapter Fourteen

The two times Anna was woken up a couple mornings later were very different.

The first time she was woken, it was still dark. The only light in the room was the bathroom light filtering in. Soft, warm lips were on hers and she could taste toothpaste on Leon’s breath.

“Hey beautiful,” he said softly, keeping his voice low. The birds weren’t even chirping outside yet.

“What time is it?” Anna asked, cold as the comfortable warmth of sleep left her.

“Just a little after five,” Leon said, breaking into a yawn. “Your dad and I are going fishing together. We’re going to head out soon.” Leon ran his fingertips through her hair, moving it out of her face. “We’ll be back after dinner tonight; we’re going to spend the day out on the river.”

“No, stay in bed,” Anna complained, scooting closer to him.

“I can’t,” he laughed, kissing her forehead, and then her lips. “I have to win your dad over.” This struck her with surprise. She couldn’t imagine Leon having to work to win anyone over; he seemed impossibly lovable to her.

“Catch a giant fish for me, then. I won’t take anything less than a fish longer than my arm,” Anna joked, relaxing into her pillow. She loved Leon, but she wasn’t going to try to go fishing at 5 am with him.

“No promises,” he replied, a smile in his voice. “Have a good day, Anna. I love you,” he added, stealing another kiss.

“I love you too.” She sighed happily, squeezing his hand.

Anna wasn’t sure if she had fallen asleep before he left the room, or if she at least waited to see him out.

All she knew was that when she woke up again, there wasn’t the pleasant smell of toothpaste.

More light came through the window. It flooded the room and filled any spot it could. Anna couldn’t enjoy it, couldn’t recognize how warm she was, or how late she could sleep in.

She was woken up by Leon’s mother shouting.

“Anna, something is wrong! Please help me, I don’t know what to do!” Her voice was panicked and loud as it burst through the doorway.

Anna sat up quickly, her skin immediately chilling into a panicked sweat.

“What’s happening?” she asked, climbing out of bed without pausing.

“It’s Dexter,” Leon’s mom said, turning back out the door.

Anna’s heart leaped into her throat. “What’s happened?” she asked, running after Leon’s mother.

“He, um…” For once she didn’t seem to know what to say.

Anna didn’t have time for that. “Where is he?”

“In the kitchen,” Leon’s mother stuttered out.

Anna pushed past her, down the stairs, down the hall and to the kitchen. Her legs couldn’t carry her fast enough, and her heart was beating through her chest.

Dexter looked pitiful.

He was lying under his leash and dish table, on his side, panting heavily. Pools of almost-black liquid surrounded his face. The beagle’s stomach heaved, and more of the liquid got out.

It stank of coffee.

“I threw the coffee in a bag and set it by the door, for fertilizer for the garden,” Leon’s mother tried to explain.
