“Here, have a cup of this. I know it’s a lot of information to take in and you’ve got more questions for me.”

Millett had moved to a side credenza where, hidden inside a top cupboard, was an espresso machine. She made two cups and Bex watched her add a dash of whiskey to each.

“I can’t drink on the job.”

“Nonsense! This is dragon-roasted coffee with Penderyn Whisky. Nothing better to get over a shock and get on with the job.”

“I’m going to have to bring Chrislynn into the station for questioning,” Bex said, taking a sip.

“I know and I can see that upsets you. I’ve made the coffee strong, that’s the way my Yankee boyfriend said all New Yorkers like their caffeine.”

Bex realized Lisa Millett was right. She was shocked at the possibility that Chrislynn, at the very least, might know more than Trish had indicated about what happened to Tate. She lifted her hand to grab the oversized earthenware mug Millett offered.

“It’s good,” she admitted, taking several more sips. The coffee was scalding, the kick from the whiskey enhancing its robust flavor. “What does ‘dragon-roasted’ mean?”

Millett dropped a beaming smile on her. “We Welsh are very particular about our dragons. I get my coffee from a small roaster in Wales and that’s what he calls the drum-like roasting machine he uses because it roars and spits fire and heat like a dragon. I traded in my teapot when I went to Canada and I never took it back when I came home.” Millett resettled herself on the sofa, cupping both hands around her mug. “Shall we move onto Rudi Stevenage?”

“First of all, how did you come to be treating both Rudi and Chrislynn?”

“Meryl’s general practitioner, Dr. Noah Aversa, recommended she take Rudi to see a therapist. His acting out behavior was causing the family problems. He continually defied his parents, argued and questioned every direction they gave, consistently blamed Airlie for anything that went wrong. Aversa gave Meryl my name. I’ve treated Rudi for three years now. Recently, Meryl recommended me to Trish to see if I could help Chrislynn adjust to homelife. I never for a moment imagined that both children would become involved in a tragedy like this.” She shook her head again. “What did you want to know about Rudi?”

“Tell me about the disorder he suffers from and what the implications of it are.”

“According to Meryl, Rudi has had difficulties with tantrums and attitude issues since he was a toddler. Then, after Airlie’s abuse case, his vengeful behavior escalated. You have to understand that Meryl devoted a lot of time to Airlie, what with the ongoing court case and getting her resettled into another school. The time and attention both parents gave her was seen by Rudi as being taken away from him. His behavior towards Airlie became more aggressive, but in a sneaky way that wasn’t always easy to pinpoint to him. When Airlie accused him of pushing her down the stairs and she broke her arm, Meryl had to admit there was a real problem.
