Dani arrived home the next day, shortly before Jonah’s school bus dropped him off. It had been a brief trip back to New York, but it had imbued her once again with the passion she needed for her job. There were so many reasons to relish working from home—chief among them having Ruth so close at hand—but what she lost was being part of a larger group, all working together with a common goal.

As soon as she walked in, Ruth ran up to her, arms outstretched. Dani scooped her up and nuzzled her neck, eliciting squeals of delight from her daughter.

“She misses you when you’re away,” Elsa said.

“I miss her, too.” Dani put Ruth down, then squatted to be level with her. “What did you do today, sweet pea?”

“Make cookies.”

“Yummy. Did you leave any for Mommy?”

Ruth nodded, then ran into the kitchen, returning a moment later with a chocolate chip cookie in her hand. “For you.”

Dani took a bite. “This is the best cookie I’ve ever had.”

A big grin broke out on Ruth’s face. “Elsa help.”

Dani spent the next fifteen minutes playing with Ruth, until it was time to meet Jonah’s bus.

“Guess what?” he said as soon as he got off. “There’s going to be a talent show at Keith’s school. I’m going to compose a new piece, and Keith is going to perform it.”

“That’s wonderful, but I didn’t know Keith played an instrument. What is it? Piano? Violin?”

“No. Guitar.”

Dani raised a brow. “You can compose for guitar?”

“Sure. For classical guitar. Keith is very masterly.”

“I can’t wait to hear it. When’s the show?”

“In four weeks. Right before Christmas.” Suddenly, Jonah’s expression grew dark. “You’ll be home, won’t you?”

There it was, the familiar tug between work and motherhood. Especially with her job, where court calendars dictated her schedule and sent her all over the country. “Of course, Jonah. I wouldn’t miss it.” As she said the words, she silently made a wish that she wouldn’t be forced to break that promise.
