Zoya continued watching the two men facing Alex; they had spent the last few minutes becoming increasingly agitated, with quicker movements and more conversation between them, and the Russian operative at the opposite end of the train coach took this to mean they were readying themselves for some sort of action.

She was on an open line with Alex, so she just very softly called his name.

“Yeah?”

She whispered now; she didn’t want Bakiyev to even know she was talking, much less what she was saying. “I need you to stand up and then I want you to casually walk back here, past me, and catch up with the three border control officers. Stay in the same car they’re in, wherever they go, but try not to make it obvious.”

“Why? What’s happen—”

“Do it now.”

A slight hesitation, and then “Okay.”

Zoya watched Velesky stand, a little more urgently than she would have liked, but he recovered, climbed out of his seat, and began walking back in her direction.

Her eyes flashed over to Bakiyev on her left, and she saw his mouth moving; he was speaking so softly she couldn’t hear a sound, but this gave her the impression he was talking to others on board about Velesky’s movements and not communicating with the pair at the opposite end of the train car, who had gotten up and started walking down the aisle.

Are there even more Russian killers on this damn train? Zoya wondered.
