Reid Tate was in my kitchen.

Coming to my rescue once again.

I wasn't sure why he was here, or how he'd managed to get in, but I was both thankful and comforted by his presence nonetheless.

J.P. shot up off the floor with a flurry of curse words, face twisted into a mask of rage. "I will beat your ass, motherfucker. No one comes at me and gets away with it." He tugged at his T-shirt and squared his shoulders. "What the hell are you doing here, anyway?" He leaned sideways and glared down at me as though he wanted to gut me with his bare hands. "Why the fuck is this loser in your house, babe?"

Reid stepped in front of me and crossed his arms, blocking J.P.'s view. "Don't talk to her, Assface. Don't look at her either. Your business here is with me now." He stood in silence like a stonewall, impenetrable and strong.

"The hell it is," J.P. said and lunged forward. He threw a punch at Reid, who dodged it with ease and retaliated with a vicious right hook.

A loud crunch echoed in my ears as Reid's fist met J.P.'s jaw. "Leave. Now," Reid said between gritted teeth. "Before things get ugly."

J.P. swiped a hand along his jaw, the skin already bruising from Reid's punch. He narrowed his eyes and made a "pssh" sound. "Ugly, huh?" Eyes blazing with unleashed adrenaline, he cracked his neck and shook his hands in front of him as if he was preparing for a fight. "How 'bout we take it up a notch from fugly to downright grotesque? Loser."

Reid let out a sinister chuckle. "My pleasure." He took a quick step backward and lunged sideways, snatching one of my mom's wine bottles off the counter. "Get out of the kitchen, Cookie. Now. And get on that cell phone of yours and call the mortuary, cuz if this mofo takes another step forward I'll kill him." Jaw locked, muscles coiling beneath his T-shirt, he held the bottle by the neck and shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He beckoned J.P. with his free hand and growled. "C'mon, asshole. Give me a reason to cross the line. I got nothing to lose."

"Reid! Stop!" I shouted as I darted to the other side of the island. "Don't…he's not worth it."

J.P., who'd taken several steps backward, turned his focus on me, his expression shifting from a mixture of anger and surprise to hurt. He eyed Reid, then me, and shook his head. Lips mashed into a thin, white line, he seared me with a look of pure hatred. "You're not worth it." He shuffled backward, slowly edging himself toward the living room and the front door. "Especially if this—" he motioned toward Reid "—is the type of low-life shit you're hanging around with now. We're through, bitch. I'm out of here."

Loud footsteps and the sound of my front door slamming were the last thing I registered before my body started shaking.

Uncontrollably.

The floor swayed beneath my feet, the walls tilting back and forth as though I was on some type of amusement park ride.
