Chapter 11

To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake,

it is necessary to stand outside in the cold.

“WHY ARE YOU in Chad’s flat?” The menacing curl of Dave’s lips had Theo frozen for a second.

“I…eh…wanted to have a word.” He wrapped his fingers around the bat.

Dave glanced at his hand, his eyes widening. “Chad!”

Fuck! Dave’s voice echoed in the staircase. “Shut the fuck up. You think the neighbours want to hear your yelling?”

“What do you care about the neighbours?” Dave pushed him in the chest. “Chad? Are you in here? Why do you have a bat?” He glared at Theo.

“It was on the floor, I picked it up.” He raised it, but Dave was faster. His fist connected with Theo’s face and for a second there was nothing but pain.

“You’re breaking in?” He started laughing. “Oh, this is great.” Dave kicked him in the stomach hard enough for Theo to dry-heave. “Chad will fucking kill you.” Dave walked around him, the sound of his steps overriding the ringing in Theo’s ears. He curled into foetal position, trying to catch his breath. The bat was right next to him, and if he could gain control of his limbs, he could bash Dave’s knee. “What were you planning to do?”

Theo ignored him.

“You know, wrecking Chad’s flat won’t save your boy. We were having a laugh before Rebecca showed up. I bet they placed her there as head of our department because your little screamer told on us. He is a screamer, isn’t he? Seems the type.”

Theo gritted his teeth, filled his lungs with air and breathed through the pain.

“It doesn’t matter. Rebecca might calm things down from time to time, but if you think she likes having to work with a faggot, you’re wrong.”

Theo took another breath, grabbed the bat, and swung. It would’ve been better if he’d been standing of course, but, judging by the howl, a bat slammed over the kneecap hurt.

Theo wasn’t as quick up on his feet as he’d hoped he’d be, but he managed to find his balance before Dave did, and swung the bat again, and again, and again.

It might be overdoing it, but Theo raised the bat over and over, and when his arms began shaking from the effort, it was hard to make out the features of Dave’s face.

Time came to a stop. Everything went quiet except for Theo’s ragged breaths.

He sent a silent prayer no dog walkers were out and about, then he dragged Dave’s body to the balcony and pushed it over the railing. It wouldn’t take a genius to figure out what had happened since the bloody drag lines pointed towards the balcony door, but Theo didn’t have the time to clean. He grabbed a tea towel from the kitchen without touching anything else. Then he wiped the door handle, both on the balcony door and the front door. It was probably a waste of time since no one would look for Theo even after they discovered the blood in the apartment. If
