Chapter 18 - Bonnie

Putting every ounce of frustration into polishing the bar, Bonnie tried to forget all that had happened the day before. She’d been cleaning at the factory the night before, and that had done nothing to stop her thinking of Jack.

Now, after only four hours of sleep, she was at it again, cleaning Nightstar’s only bar just as she did most mornings before it opened at eleven.

But the bar being closed did little to deter some people. Bonnie heard them coming just before the pounding on the front door.

She shouldn’t open it. She knew she shouldn’t. Maybe they’d just go away. If they had been human, they probably would have if she just kept quiet.

But the people hammering on the door weren’t human.

“Open up, Bonnie! We know you’re in there!”

The voice of one of Karl’s cronies sounded through the door before the hammering started again.

“Don’t make us break this door down, Bonnie!”

Hanson’s voice only eased her tension a little. Of all Karl’s men, he was the least frightening, the one she thought might actually have a heart underneath all his muscle and bravado.

“Hold on, I’m coming!” Bonnie called back, rinsing her hands in the sink. It’d take a week to get the smell of polish out her hands, and by that time she’d be doing it all over again. That’s what she thought on in an attempt to keep herself calm as she went to answer the door.

The second the lock clicked, the door was shoved open. Bonnie went reeling backwards and just managed to catch herself against one of the booths.

“You know, you really shouldn’t keep your alpha waiting, Bonnie.”

Karl Ryker stalked in behind his musclemen almost looking weedy.

He wasn’t small in any shape or form, but compared to his bodyguards and lackeys, he wasn’t the least bit impressive. It was quite clear to Bonnie that all her mother saw in him was his status.

Clearing her throat, Bonnie asked, “What can I do for you, alpha? I’m afraid the bar isn’t open for another hour. I’m just finishing up the cleaning.”

She gulped when one of the men stepped behind the alpha to close the door, locking it and removing the key.

“Have a seat, Bonnie.”

At Karl’s words, Hanson grabbed a chair and swung it toward her. His eyes said ‘sorry about this’ as he grabbed her shoulder and slammed her down into the seat.

“Alright, alright, there’s no need to be so rough,” Bonnie protested, trying her hardest to keep up her confidence.

“I want a progress report, Bonnie.”

Dennis, the bodyguard who never seemed to leave Karl’s side, grabbed a chair for his alpha and placed it just meters away from her.

Karl dropped down into it languidly and looked at his fingernails. He sucked through his teeth and looked at her with a bored expression.

This isn’t going to go well, Bonnie thought. It was pretty easy to tell in the first couple of minutes how her alpha was going to treat her.

Sometimes he let her be with a few sour words, other times things got violent.
