Chapter 8

I finally made it to campus just in time for another lab meeting. I was a little early even, and found a spot farthest away from where Brandi had been at the first one. My fingers still ached and I wasn’t emotionally capable of handling her bitchy take on everything. I just prayed she’d get the hint and fuck off.

Rome and Whitt had pried the razor blade off the handle of my car before I’d come to school. It had been cemented in there with some quick drying glue that was easy enough to pop off once you knew it was there.

But it had been specifically designed to point the edge of the blade where my fingers would naturally grip the handle. I twitched and flexed them just thinking about it, and the throbbing ache grew with the movement.

“So glad you could join us this afternoon, Miss Montgomery,” Thomas said with his eyebrows lifted in mocking disdain. “I understand you were too hung over to make the morning assistant’s meeting?”

“I wasn’t hung over, I had an accident,” I said and held my hand up. “I cut myself.”

“I didn’t take you for the cutting type,” he replied and dropped his stack of books on the table in front of his seat. “You seem to be the flouncing little cheerleader type. They aren’t known for having an emo phase.”

I frowned and let the irritation flutter through me before I replied. I couldn’t risk being a bitch to him, I needed his approval at the end of the day.

“I’m not,” I replied evenly, making direct eye contact. “I’m not a cutter, nor am I a cheerleader.”

“Good to hear it, perhaps your boyfriend could be more careful if you’re fooling around,” he said, nodding at my hand. “That looks like a razor cut.”

“Why would you say that?” I asked and jerked my head up to stare him down again. Was he the one who put it under my door handle? Why would he know about the razor blade.

“I’m making assumptions again,” he replied, and at last his face softened. His handsome features appeared from behind the mask of arrogance and he said, “I’m truly sorry if I offended. I know I can get short-tempered when I find somebody—”

“Good afternoon, Steph,” Brandi said, cutting him off as she came into the meeting room. “Nice of you to join us after your night of hard partying.”

Thomas distanced himself again and I realized I’d lost his soft side. Fucking Brandi, I didn’t even know what he had meant to say. Did he find me annoying? Attractive? Intolerable? Sexy? God, she was so fucking irritating.

“What makes you think I was partying?” I challenged her. “I didn’t come in because I had an accident.”

“I just assumed, I guess,” she replied and took her spot on the opposite end of the table from me. At least she’d gotten the hint. “Sorry, I didn’t realize you were a cutter, not a partier.”

“Why does everyone assume cutter?” I exhaled in frustration. “Not a partier, either.
