Chapter Seven

"It is all well and good to exhibit a captured beast, majesty," Captain Mazar said softly, "but to take such a creature and turn it into a civilized gentleman, that is a challenge far greater. It would be an achievement of admirable degree."

Queen Ingaret knew that this idea had come from the brute's new bride, siphoned to her by the Captain, who pretended it was his own idea. Ha! As if she didn't know everything that went on and was said in her palace.

But fortunately for Lady Isabella, the queen was in a good mood for once. She had just won three rounds of cards and executed two prisoners. A fine afternoon's work.

"Very well," she said calmly. "I shall provide books and professors for the brute. See what can be done, for I am curious." She'd seen the newly shaven Brutus and was as surprised as anyone to see a finely chiseled jaw and face. He cut a formidable figure in the new clothes Lady Isabella had sewn for him too, using scraps of her own gowns or materials purchased at the market. They made a stunning couple— Isabella with her fair, delicate beauty, and Brutus so tall and muscular with his darker coloring and lumbering stride. Of course, he was not permitted to dine in the great hall with the other courtiers. He was confined mostly to a few rooms and passages in the palace, and some tree-lined walks. Guards had been appointed to watch him, just in case he ever felt the unlikely desire to run away, but his marriage to Isabella had done wonders to calm the brute's rages and he was so eager to please his young bride it was truly quite pathetic to observe.

The queen had granted the couple a small dowry upon the marriage and permitted them to use two rooms in the north wing of her palace, so she could keep an eye on them.

Literally.

Every night she watched the newlyweds mate through holes in the wall. Sometimes it excited her enough to allow one of the guards under her skirts before the night was over. Only with his tongue, of course. Often she preferred a maid to pleasure her instead— after a good whipping across the buttocks. But at other times she grew bored. Watching the mismatched lovers coo and purr over each other was quite sickening and now that Brutus was learning more words they did too much talking.

"Send Lady Isabella to me," she snapped. "I would have words with her, before this education proceeds."

"Yes, majesty."

Isabella walked into the chamber, curtseyed and kept her eyelids lowered, her hands demurely folded before her.

For a long time the queen merely stared at her. Then, finally, she exclaimed angrily, "You are not yet pregnant."

She swallowed. "I just started my courses, majesty."

"I know this is the second flux since the wedding night. Your maid was instructed to let me know the moment it happened again." The queen walked up to her, placed one spindly finger under her chin and forced it upward.
