Rastogi made an entry in his black diary and asked, ‘Where were you the night Deshmukh was killed?’

‘I was in Pune the whole of last week, and returned yesterday at around 5 p.m.,’ she said.

‘Why did you go to Pune?’

‘I have been looking for a change of place … after what … happened here …’ her voice trailed off. She sighed and continued, ‘I went there looking for work, visited a few hospitals, but…’

Rastogi noted down the names of the hospitals Arti said she had visited. He would have that checked.

‘You wanted to leave Mumbai because you were scared that Deshmukh might find you?’

Arti nodded, shivering slightly.

‘And now that he is dead?’

‘I don’t know … maybe … maybe not.’

Holding on to his knees, Rastogi slowly got up. Arti stood up too, looking relieved.

‘One last question … for now,’ Rastogi said. ‘What is the name of your friend, the one who helped you get the job here?’

‘Manohar Rao, he stays on the first floor.’
